help! doe with itchy butt

My 11 month old ND doe is 1 month pregnant and has an itchy butt. Last time she had this was end of summer, I used Valbazen and it cleared up. Now she's pregnant and I can't use Valbazen. She actually was sitting on the ground this AM rubbing her butt and has sores where the hair meets the skin. Other areas around her anus look crusty white. The time before I suspected tapeworm but I don't see any 'rice'. Could this be worms or something else? Otherwise her gums are normal, she's her usual happy energetic self.

You can use safeguard for tapes and cydentic pour on as orally that is safe while she is pregnant.. But i think u need to get the fecal checked out first to see whats going on..

I'd go with Strongid paste wormer for horses- Safegard is practically useless in many parts of the country. Strongid will get tapes, but I would suspect 'pin worms'. They are easy to check for- take some scotch tape, put it across the anus, and use a microscope or take to vet for his microscope. Eggs are really easy to see on the tape.

Thank you for your help. I'd heard that Safeguard was safe, but also not very effective. I'll get Strongid and put some hydrocortisone on in the meantime.

I think the effectiveness of Safeguard depends on the goat. One of my Saanens stayed worm-free on it; another did well for the first year and a half and then I had to switch.

Goats shed worms in their feces. They are not like people or dogs with worms that come out and go back in and hang around. If the worms are at the end of the digestive system they are exiting and they are walking away from them on the ground. Your doe may be having a reaction to something she is eating. Think in terms of any feed changes you have made. You do need to fecal to see what parasites you have so you can worm properly but worms do not cause itchy butts in goats because they do not hang around on the outside of their body.
