We don't. Disbudding is within the first week. Vaccines come later.

I give about 1/4cc of Tetanus Antitoxin at disbudding. Sometimes I have forgotten to do that, and didn't notice any problems.

More like at least 2ml per kid- I NEVER do ear marking or disbudding without giving a Tetanus Anti-toxin shot. I've seen too many cases of tetanus from NOT giving the vaccine at disbudding.

I don't give vaccines until 4 and 8 weeks of age. Disbudding is done in the first week of life. The wound formed from disbudding is not adequate for the growth of the C. tetani bacterium, which requires deep puncture wounds (it is obligate anaerobic). The process of disbudding leaves an open, cauterized wound.

I don't tattoo until much older either, usually after the first round of vaccines.

It also depends on what 'vaccine' you mean. Antitoxin is only a temporary preventative. I don't know the doseage of that. If you're giving a CD/T then you always give 2cc.

I also don't give anti-toxin for disbuddings or castrations and never had a problem. Just my preference; everyone has their own management.

I don't give tetanus anti-toxin or vaccine at disbudding. The kids do get several doses of vaccine along with their CD vaccine beginning at 21 days.. I do keep anti-toxin for both tetanus & entro but only use them when I find it really necessary.

If your does got their pre-kidding CDT shots, the kids are covered until they get their CDT shots at one month of age. CDT covers entero and tetanus.
I never use any type of anti-toxin, as my kids are covered by their mothers vaccinations at that young age. I've disbudded and tattooed literally hundreds of kids and never had a case of tetanus.

as my goat said. tetanus has some particular conditions it needs to grow in. a disbudding job is about as far from those conditions as you can get. what she means by
"obligate anaerobic" is that it grows in the absence of air exclusively. that is why deep puncture wounds are the type of wounds known to brood tetanus. the wound can close on the outside and leave the inside pocket sealed off from air. that just can't happen with disbudding. it always cracks me up when I hear of people disinfecting their disbudding tips also. as if becoming scorching hot won't disinfect it! the recomendations for that as well as tetanus shots before disbudding are just repeated over and over without anyone thinking about it imo.

Also, as Ozark said, I vaccinate my does pre-kidding. I give their yearly CDT booster a month before kidding, and kids get vaccines at 4 and 8 weeks.
