There is a vaccine. You can get it from jeffers - however, most people do not vaccinate for it because it will cause all of your goats to test positive. If you know your herd IS negative and clean, then vaccinating them may be a good way to prevent them from getting the disease. Usually it is used to protect your negative goats from contracting the disease when you know they may be exposed to it. If your goats may be positive or are positive, the vaccine will not stop them from developing bursting abscesses, it will only prevent known negative animals from contracting the disease. The vaccinated animals are not contagious for the disease either.

You will still have to practice biosecurity and testing of all incoming stock for multiple testings to make sure they are clean.

I wonder if someone doesn't have a test to tell the difference between a vaccinated positive and an infected positive just like for Lymes in dogs.

So far I have one doe who was vaccinated at 6 mos and always shows at the lowest level. She doesn't show negative but under 1:8 which is the level that the sensativity of the test is not able to determine that she is really positive.
She has never shown any signs that she has CL but I know she had an exposure so I vaccinated just the initial and booster shot one time.

I would presume this is the one.

Caseous D-T

Cl. Perf. Type D, Tetanus & Caseous Lymphadenitis Bacterin-Toxoid

(Colorado Serum)
Vaccine protects against Caseous Lymphadenitis, overeating disease and lockjaw in sheep. Administer 2 ml SQ to healthy sheep of any age. Repeat in 4 weeks, in a space opposite 1st dose. Annual booster recommended.

Yes, that is the vaccine. I've actually been toying around with vaccinating my herd too... not sure if I want to.

thanks so much. I was hesitant about doing this, but would rather be safe than sorry. I'd rather have someone not want to buy one of them because they don't trust why I'm vaccinating them than to have a problem
