Bo-Se Injections??

At work today one of our vets was talking about Bo-Se Injections. She was saying that does need them before they give birth and if they dont have one. The kid should get one at about 2 weeks?

Do you guys know anything about this? Our doe did not have a bo-se shot before she gave birth. Should we give the doeling one? Also when should the doeling get a CDT?

I've given BoSe injections in the past but now since the vet I got it from no longer will sell it to me without them making a home visit (at 100.00/hr. a 25 minute drive which they'll probably charge for, and NO real reason for them to come) I plan on giving oral selenium monthly.

If a newborn is having problems with it's legs or feet, I give it 1/2 cc of BoSe. Some folks I know automatically give it at birth. I don't routinely give it to any of my goats, but like to have it on hand during kidding season. I give my goats free choice mineral and they frequently eat more during late pregnancy.

I have never given Bo-Se to any of my goats, adults or kids. They have never needed it & I try to make sure they have everything they need in there feed, hay & minerals. I do give CD & T's regular though.

If your soil is low in selenium, give it. If it is adequate, then you don't need too. The thing with minerals is, goats will only eat enough of it to get the salt they need. Hay will be deficient if it is grown in deficient soil. And grains are all different across the board - and if you have meat goats, they don't need grain for most of the year so supplementing is a good idea.

If your vet is telling you about Bo-Se for goats, she is way ahead of most vets! If she is reccomending them for you, I would do the Bo-Se shots.

They are routine here as we are very low in selenium. The health of my herd is better since I started to make sure my goats selenium levels were good by using Bo-Se, and loose mineral of course.

Now, I never give the Bo-Se to my newborn kids, just to the adults twice a year(pre-breeding and pre-kidding), and to my kids at 2-4-6 months of age.

So I would at least do the Bo-Se pre-kidding if your vet is reccomending it.
