External Parasites

Hi,

I just took a look at one of my does and she has some little brownish bugs crawling around. I'm sure that all four probably have them. Three does and a buck in a breeding pen. Any recommendations on treatments?

I've never had problems before, but since I got a few spent hens to butcher now my BBW hens have mites and now this. I've not treated anyone yet because I want to do everyone at the same time.

Heidi

I know injectable ivermectin will kill external mites. I haven't had goats very long though, so really haven't got much info.

One of my milking does had lice earlier this year. I mixed equal parts of powdered sulphur and DE and rubbed it into her hair. Never saw lice on her again.

there are two types of lice. biting and sucking. you will want to determine what you have in order to treat it effectively.

you might be surprised to find that only one of your goats seems to be infested (that doesn't neccessarily mean you don't want to treat them all) it seems that some goats just make happier homes for lice then others. I have two that seem to be lice breeders. and several that I never find any on.

I have searched everywhere for DE cant find it from what I have read on it I wanted to give it a try. I have been battling fleas for 5 months since we moved into this place. My dogs are miserable and my goats keep scratching. Course my dogs have always been on a flea preventive (topical and internal) I have used them all trying to find one that will kill the darn things. So anyone know where to get DE from I don't need a large quantity of it and thats all I can find online?

Is there a way to tell the difference? They are about 1/32-1/16" long, long, and amber colored.

My husband picked up some Permethrin dusting powder, since that is all we have available locally. I was just going to dust all the goats, chickens, ducks, and turkeys today with that...plus all their bedding.

I believe I found DE at Lowe's in the garden section. It's used to kill/discourage root maggots on your brassicas. I'll have to see where I put it and maybe add that to the bedding as well. The poultry are not dusting themselves now since everything is frozen here.

I use Dectomax (injectable). I got it at the feed store. Its in a short fat bottle (you buy a syringe/needle seperate) and it works VERY well. it kills all internal and external parasites and I've only had to give it to my goats/pigs/etc. about once or twice max in an entire year.
