Q Fever

I was talking to a friend in CO and she said that her sister in law just got an email from a former employer (goat dairy) suggesting the SIL be tested for Qfever as the employer and her family and other employees were testing positive. The employer's daughter has been ill from it.

Just curious how many test for it or take precautions. It can be spread by cattle, sheep, goats and cats in feces and placentas and amniotic fluid. It is inhaled in dust particles and can cause flu like symptoms.

I do not pay attention to it. I first read about it when I got goats and then again recently when I stabbed myself with a needle I had just used on a goat
I do live in CO but have not heard of any cases of it. If I have been exposed it has not made me sick and I figure it is like salmonella, I handle chicks and lizards so I am hoping I am past the getting sick stage.

It's taken a lot more seriously around here I guess, a customers herd was quarinteened, he killed the entire herd of does...his wife tested positive and very matter of fact was told it was why she had so many misscarriages....obviously it was devastating to them. It is part of the routine testing we used to do to export, it's pretty rare in that with the thousand or more goats we tested we have never had a doe be positive. Also a milk borne disease. Vicki
