Scrapies / Health Certificate / NAIS ?

I didn't want to hijack another thread where someone brought up NAIS as if it had been mentioned further up the thread.... which is wasn't.

I think it's possible the poster was confused because I mentioned the Scrapies tags and health certificate required for interstate travel with goats. Perhaps that person thought (in error) that the Scrapies eradication program was part of NAIS and had been canceled because the major funding for NAIS failed in committee.

Scrapies eradication is separate from NAIS. Very similar in effect, but most definitely NOT a pilot program, and NOT cancelled.

For reference:

Texas requirement from the above website:
All breeding or exhibition goats must be identified with an official ear tag, except registered goats with a registration tattoo and accompanied by registration papers.

True and not so true...

Here in PA they mandated you tag all goats for any movement. Then they volunteered you into the state NAIS system. So in effect NAIS is now madatory if you have goats and ever intend to move them from your property in PA.

Even in PA they accept registry tattoos as official ear tags as long as you are signed up and tell them your tattoo ID's, just like Texas. Yes you are then in a state data base which automatically enrolls you in all federal programs pertaining to animal tracking and movement. If you don't sell animals to others in the programs or apply for a health certificate to sell animals out of state, all of this is moot.

NAIS not having funding is not killing this program. We will have NAIS in some form, just like Scrapie, mostly because people will not deal with communicable disease in their own herds, so the government has to step in and make them at least not be able to to sell and contaminate the meat supply. And the ability to track these diseased carcasses back to where they caught it is what NAIS is all about. Vicki

True and not true? What wasn't true? (not mad, just wondering)

Mine are all tattooed and have papers, so they don't have tags.

Yes, I know that the Scrapies program automatically gets you a premises ID.

In my very personal opinion, the Scrapies program is a back door NAIS-type system. It is very obviously an animal identification system. Because I travel between states with my goats, I have no option to ignore the law/program.

Where you said they were separate. Here for all practical purposes they are linked.

As for the tattoo v/s tag. They both have the same result. Your listed in the computer data base.

Oh, I agree with you completely. I only meant separate in that the funding for Scrapie Eradication wasn't cut when NAIS was.

We are on the same page!
