What Milk Filters Do You Use?

I have been using the Filter - Clean milk filters from Schwartz for about 3 years now...they are SO slow! I can use 3 filters for just 1 1/2 gallons...

Our does are Alpine and LaMancha's, we use a machine so there isn't hardly a thing to strain out, and none of our does have mastitis issues or the like. We have a cow that is going to freshen in a couple more months and I really need to find a filter that goes much faster.

What do you use? Does it go fast and do you like them?

Thanks so much!

I'm too lazy to get up & go look at the box, but they're the six-inch filters from Hoegger. What are you straining into? I use 1/2 gallon Mason jars. Sometimes the base of the filter fits the jar rim too tight for air to escape & milk will barely flow through. If I tip the filter just a bit, it solves the problem.

Yeah, I get mine from Hoeggers too...we use a 1/2 gallon mason jar and sometimes we can tip it and it'll go "fast" but that is rarely....most times it's just a dribble. Is there a certain way (that I'm not aware of) to put the filter in?

Thanks,
Jenna

I use a folded cloth diaper 4xs over, one of the thinner type not the heavy thick ones, since I hand milk I do get floaties and have never had any make it past, and it holds the cream when I drain my milk so I have no complaints and it moves quickly through.
I hand wash them good then boil to santize.

I bought regular milk filters from the farm store and they were very fast (orange box is all I can remember). The frugal side of me said I can't do that and went to coffee filters. It takes alot longer, but I'm really in no hurry. I put a funnel inside the mason jar, then the filter, and then another funnel with the tip cut off about 2 inches. It keeps the filter in place and makes life much easier

I currently have 6" filters that I ordered from pbsanimalhealth.com. There were 600 in the bag for $16. The milk runs through quickly. I filter into mason jars. I also just use a canning funnel with the filter formed into a cone in it.

what are you holding the pads with? We use the Schwartz brand and like them. We can dump 2 gallon in the strainer and it rolls right through.
