coyote problem

One ripped off the part of my next doors peoples goat. They have better fencing than I do, and i have kids. Their goats also have horns. Mind do not. Not really sure why it got theirs and not mine, but i am NOT complaining lol So they are camping out waiting for the bugger to come back and gona shoot it with a long rifle. Im worried about their goats a mine. Sorry just hat to hare the news, This is the first time iv even heard about coyotes near me!

edit-- daisy(the goat) is doing ok. From what i can tell they have doctored her up pretty well

I hope they get it! We also have a coyote, it was getting my chickens.
We have yet been able to get it and its going on a year. We have caught it on game trail cam but the times are erratic. We just keep trying.

HMm ususally coyotes are in packs, you only see one? One winter here, my brother and son shot 30 + and didn't touch them. There was a bounty on them. They would come up in front of my brothers barn and when we checked sheep at nite when he was gone, they would run across the motion lights to the other side of the pen and sit and watch us. We saw at least 6 or 8 in the pasture where the donkey was, donkey didn't care. My brother no longer has sheep, we lock our goats up at nite, I have a paint gelding in the pasture and I think he keeps everything under control-he almost killed a strange dog that came into the pasture. He is gentle with the goats and our children, we have a gun, but if they don't bother us, we leave them alone.

coyote problem - Goats
this is on a Sunday afternoon. the rest of them are in the upper right hand corner out of view of the camera, this one turned to look back. for some reason it looks far away, but just across the road. hmm I think there were about 6 or 8.
Get a gun and practice--well check the laws in your state and areas first. We do worry about mange and rabies here, but like I said if they don't bother us, we don't bother them--but the big cat that moves through---well ............

Oh I might also add that I had my geese in the penned lagoon, went to check on them, saw one coyote in the lagoon and others behind it, I took rocks and pelted it chasing, until it turned and came toward me. I thought -OMG and turned and ran, but I had chased it past the spot it had dug under the fence, it crawled under the fence and left. I filled the hole and put heavy rocks where I thought there were weak spots. fox, mink, weasels, owls, hawks and we have eagles from the river that have picked up lambs, and chickens and cats.

Here they are all scrawny and mangy looking. It is legal to shoot them. I need to go get one of our guns outa the safe. Thankfully I do know how to shoot Im also gona get one of those big maglight flashlights so If need be i can hit one with it
I dont want to lose my kids!

We have alot of coyotes around here too. So far we've been lucky! They are very smart critters & hard to catch by trying to wait them out to shoot them. Here people use big traps to get them or after deer season it's legal to hunt them with dogs. Last winter a couple guys from this area that dh knows shot 29 coyotes in this area & I still hear them quite often & close.

Well it is a strange feeling to have them cross the light in front of you and sit just out of range and watch you--or watch a scary movie and have them start howling jsut about under your window. LOL It kinda freaked the human kids out. Watching an eagle swoop down and pick up a lamb or a chicken is kinda freaky also. chased a fox with one of my half grown geese, mink and weasel can wipe out birds in a night-even turkeys. Some years it is an ever ending battle.

there seems to be lots of regional differences and this has been debate before. I rarely have seen coyotes in packs around here. ten years ago the property I lived on had a pack of coyotes. it probably depends alot on hunting pressure, availablity and type of game (deer need a pack - rabbits don't) and time of year.

I hope they catch the bugger! sometimes people bait them with a chicken on a stake. especially an injured one.

I had one in my pasture about 50 feet from the barn. I about had a heart attack. My dog took off after it and chased it a long ways away. I have never seen another one since. (Thank you lord). He was a OLD one so hopefully he died.

DH shot one about a week and a half ago - it was so mangy, he didn't quite know what it was. I looked at it and told him it was a young coyote. He saw three of them, altogether.

I heard them singing tonight, up towards the paved road. All the neighbourhood dogs are going nuts.

I chased one down when it had my gander in its mouth. It dropped the bird, which, sadly, expired in my arms on the way back to the barn. It was the one night that the geese refused to come into the barn, and the coyote grabbed him just around dawn, as I was going out to do chores.

One came to the door of the barn in I think july or august? My daughter was in there looking at the baby calf and thought it was her dog. She turned around and it was a cyottee. She threw sticks and yelled to scare it away. it was problly trying to eat her little dog. The calf spent the night in the laundry room (ssshh don't tell hubby). A few weeks later my hubby saw it in the yard looking at a calf we had left out (he had a hurt leg). He couldn't get a shot off without being clear of my calf so h didn't shoot it. Every time the calf moved the bell would make noise around its neck and the cyottee would run then come back aand as the calf would move again it wold run away again. It never got anything of ours but the kids found a dead shep of the neighbors. We don't know if the cyottee was the culprit or not as there are wild dogs around here too. Someone said kill them with bait but knowing us our dog would eat it
Good luck

That hole would have been an excellent place to hang a snare.

To keep coyotes and fox from digging under fences put an electric fence wire out from the fence 18-24" and 12" off the ground. They back into it as they dig. My turkey farmer friend taught me that. They had theirs set up so it could be lifted up for mowing.
