The Alaska Mini Goat Cache also held an ADGA One-Day Group Milking Competition Aug 26-27.
Miniature Breed Highest Milk of Day went to SilverAurora JC WhisperSweetly, a Nigerian Dwarf owned by H. Fair, Fair Skies who milked 3.0 pounds.
Standard Breed Highest Milk of Day went to Kennelwood Sparkles HashBrown, a Nubian owned by C. Hepler, Kennelwood Farm who milked 4.7 pounds.
Other placings for the milk test follow:

Although these postings seem like low weights, we must remember that the does had spent the day in the trailer, arrived at a strange venue, gone through vet check over a period of a few hours, found themselves surrounded by strange noises and sights and sounds (including other livestock they've never seen or heard before), then barely got settled in their new pens before they were asked to milk. The milk test was done the first and second days at the Fair grounds of a 1- to 2-week stay away from home. Even so, it's interesting to note that some of the miniatures out-performed some of the standard breeds.
The Alaska Mini Goat Cache's Annual Obstacle Course for All Ages & Breeds was also great fun and Fair Skies started a "Goats on Loan" program wherein exhibitors could use one of our wethers or jr. does to run the course for $1/goat donation to the club. Fair Skies loaned out goats to 11 exhibitors (about half of those participating).
Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all those who participated.
The Alaska Mini Goat Cache wishes to extend their gratitude to the following:
Dr. Teresa Beck, North Star Animal Hospital - ADGA show Vet Check
Will Pearson, Jr., Jug-Tavern Farm - ADGA judge
Pioneer Ridge Inn Bed & Breakfast - provided discount accommodations for our judge
Show Secretary - Robyn McBride, Winterhaven
Volunteers - Kari McKellar, Breanna
Milk Test Supervisor - Tisa Witham, Edgefield Farm
Show posters design & printing - Laura Manary, Boreas Acres
Best in Show & Highest Milk of Day Award Plaques - Heather Fair, Fair Skies
Judge's Transportation - Karlene Brouillet, My Kids Farm
Goats on Loan for Obstacle Course - Heather Fair, Fair Skies

I was very pleased to see the number of herds practicing bio-security, with tarps lining their pens' floors and walls, chicken wire or other blockings to keep babies from escaping, and hand sanitizer mounted on just about every other pen. I was also happy to hear that many of the folks that attended are now testing for CAE, CL, & Johne's, as we test our entire herd regularly.
We wanted to support the Fair's activities since they provided a free venue for the ADGA shows & milking competition, in addition to the AKMGC's Obstacle Course for All Ages & Breeds. Plus, you can win premiums from the Fair in the Open Livestock Shows when you win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the open shows! Although we had to leave some in the pens without showing them at all due to lack of handlers, we showed quite a few goats in the open shows thanks to the many helpful handlers that did hang around to help out. We had several firsts, seconds, and a few thirds. In the end, our Gracie took home Division Champion for ALL goats and I took second in Adult Showmanship.
I also had fun entering my turkeys for the first time this year. They were a full year older than the others entered but they did well and I plan to enter more in the future. I didn't get to enter my ducks, though, as I had to work late at my new job on vet check night for second entry.
I did a few informal milking demonstrations and I was so busy with the goat stuff that I missed a lot of the other things going on (even other goat classes). So if you were there, please share - how did you do at the Fair??
I also attended the 4H Livestock Auction. I did my usual add-ons for a few hard-working kids and to my surprise, I also ended up with a beautiful market wether raised by M. Manary at Boreas Acres/Snowy Days Farm. I believe he is full-blood boer, but may be high percentage. In any event, he will be a nice addition to the freezer but since I have known him since the day he was born (1/1/2009) and visit his farm often, I know he comes from a trusted, clean-tested herd and I already have their complete test results, so I opted to bring him home for a while to enjoy a few more months of fall. I was surprised he went for only $5.25/pound live weight. In years past, goats & sheep have gone for over $12/pound live weight, since it is to help the 4H kids.
So that was our annual Alaska State Fair in Palmer. What fun!
