Flakey goat

Frankie has white flakes in his coat....like dandruff. His skin looks and feels normal..not really dry or anything. He gets plenty of browse, grass hay, BOSS and loose minerals with 3000ppm of copper. Gretta and Flossie don't have it. Any ideas?

When I got my calves they had flakey skin~ just like you describe~ Dandruff like. I thought it was normal. Vet told me my cows had lice! I was pretty outraged.......but I guess it's not unusual and they are species specific so Cow lice would not be interested in ME! If there is such a thing as Cow lice......there is probably such a thing as goat lice.....or since their normal body temps are close to each other maybe Cow lice like Goats too? I used the cydectin as a pour on and gave them an ivermectin shot and it worked.....the calves skin cleared up.

Yeah it sounds like it could be lice.
Say, what brand of minerals are you using if you dont mind?

MasterGain...And I can't find the label. I always had it right here by my computer...then we moved. ugh! But I think that is what it's called. I'll look harder in the morning.

I have a doe that had really flaky skin for awhile but I gave her a little more BOSS a day for awile & put skin so soft from avon on her & haven't had that problem since.

I do have a cattle pour on from TSC that I use in the summer months about ever 6 weeks or so, not really for lice as I don't think they have ever had them that I can tell but it also works for flies, etc. I think I used it twice on them since May.

I used to use that mastergain mineral because that was the best I could get here but still was having problems with the copper issue I think. Mine was a red mineral & I do think it is absorbed into the body differently.
Anyways my feed store started ordering the CARGILL brand "Right Now Onyx" mineral for me & it has probly been 2 months or a little longer & I can see a noticeable difference in all the goats in general since switching minerals.

Thanks Katie...Yes I think I got the Mastgain because you said you used it. Well now I'll have to get someone to order the Cargill Onlyx for me because I wanna be just like you
Do you pour on the pour on? That really sounds like a stupid question. Is it applied like frontline on dogs? I have never used a pour on. I do have the skin so soft...and I'll sneak Frankie some extra BOSS. He is so needy LOL

Your so funny Minelson, But I want to be just like you!

I did usre the mastergain because that was the best I could find around here but I did still have some copper issues in my goats even if I bolused them. I had read on here that alot of folks used the Cargill brand & I think it's Vicki & Emily(ozark jewels) that have talked about the gray colored verses the red colored minerals in different posts & that the Cargill one was a gray mineral etc. Finally my feed store orde3rs it for me, I even have 2 other people who have got goats from me buying the same mineral from them. I really do notice a big difference in there coats & no Fish tails either.

The pour on I do pour on, kinda like a dog & frontline. I pour it down there back in a line like & let it soak in the skin, etc. It's called "Lice no more" & I get it at TSC. I'm still on the same bottle but has lasted me for 2 summers now. I'll have to buy another 1 next year though.
