Tattoo’s

Just got my tattoo kit from Hoegger supply and I’m really scared now.
I was told (bad advice) that a tattoo was optional when breeding and registering a goat.
Come to find out you MUST have a tattoo to register a goat. I have Alpine/Togg mixes, trying to bring them back to total Alpine.
These things are so sharp and look like they are going to be very painful.

Since I was told otherwise, I didn’t do it. Now I have a 65 pound, 3 month old good girl (who can be a pill of a goat) to tattoo.

Have a lady lined up and a girl to help me do this. The lady has a sheep shearing station (head restraint).
I’m thinking taking her somewhere else and having other people around will make her think two things, one is this is not good and it’s gonna hurt, second is I love my owner and she has brought me back to where I belong and she’s a good person.

Am I right in doing this?

Have any of you done this to an older kid?

How did it work out?

Kris

I've had to tattoo adults before. Painful, yes, but they forget minutes after getting off of the stand. If you really want your herd to go where it's going, do it. It is the best thing for them, just like dehorning. Tattooing, dehorning, hoof trimming, and having a healthy animal all are things that help your animals attain more worth and therefore often better homes in the future.

I just finished tattooing a yearling and two 3/4 month does. Not a big problem but it does take two people. One to hold one to tattoo.

Thanks for all the input, I feel better now.
I'll just take her over (with my kit) and do it with Linda's help.

She's gonna be really mad, but once it done it's done, just like dehorning and such.
