Nail in the hoof - Advice please

One of my does showed up lame, carrying a front leg in front of her. I put her up on the milk stand and found a very rusty square top roofing nail embedded in her hoof. I pared out the hoof until there was a good drain hole visible, soaked the foot in hot betadine water for about 15 minutes, gave her injections of Banamine and Agrimycin, boosted her Tetanus, and wrapped the foot with plenty of gauze to allow drainage and to protect from further contamination. Anything else I should do for her?? She is walking on it this evening, even jumping up on the dog houses. I'm not sure where she picked up the nail.

Sounds exactly like what we did for our horse when he got a nail in his hoof. The only difference is his hoof got an abscess so we continued the betadine water soaks everyday along with a poultice (It was sugar and betadine, I can't remember if it had anything else.) But it sounds like you found her nail fast enough so that it wont abscess

I had a Boer buckling with a similar injury. I would soak it like that everyday for 4-5 days and rewrap with Neosporin in the wound. The wrap dry for a few more days. Keep checking for excessive heat in the foot and above the foot.

She's doing great. It's starting to close and is staying very clean. There has not been much discharge from it at all. She's walking well on it, too.

with horse absesses I soak and then pack the wound with a strip of gauze soake din betadine. You want that wound to stay open and heal from inside out. so i owuld soak and pack and wrap. hope this helps. if the outside hole closes b4 the inside heals you can end up with problems.
