Show me your milking stand

Well Marge our good old girl has been doing much better since we have been milking her. But laying on my side is not the ideal position to milk her out. We have decided for my comfort we should build a milking stand. I have no idea where to start. I looked up the metal ones on the hoegger website, But I would like to see some pics of what works.

Thanks

sorry, we have the metal one. got it from a friend. I will say, the metal ones are handy if you show at all, but they can be cold to sit on!
I have seen tall and short, depends on you and your goats. I would guess 2 feet wide and 4 feet long? - gotta be plans somewhere, did you try fiasco?

DH has made 3, the first two he sold. The third one he made it bigger than the biggest boer doe we have. That way we have plenty of room to trim hoofs, examine or do what ever is necessary to the goat.

He pretty much used a plan very much like the one on Fiasco farm.

Here's a link to the one I made. Really easy and it took about 1/2 a day.

If you make up your own dimensions, remember that too wide means the doe can move away from you when you are trying to milk, trim or whatever. I also have the Fiasco Farm one. If you have long bodied does, you may want it to be about 6 inches longer, but the size in the plans has worked for me, even with my bigger does, but it is a little short for them.

Download plans here.

Do not make the platform wider.

This was built from scraps I had using the plans from http://scroungeman.blogspot.com/2006/07/freebie.html That I modified to fit my Nigerians.

I straddle the milkstand and milk from behind. This one is about 2 inches too wide & tall for me, so my toes just barely touch the ground when I'm sitting on it. (I'm 5'4") Other than that it works just fine. I am planning on building another one sometime this summer to fit me better.

Hubby made me one similar to the wooden one except there is a short railing on one side, this way the doe can't keep moving away. I would worry that with out a railing on one side she might fall off and break her neck! Her head would be stuck in, with her body falling over the side.

Ours in next to the wall, so I don't have to worry about them falling, but sometimes I wish mine was narrower.

I am milking Nigerians so they are smaller and easier to control - but I've never had one put more than one hoof off the side. Doesn't take them long to learn to stand in the middle. Plus they are only up when I am actually milking - I don't walk away and leave them there.

I have Nigerians, and no milking stand. We happened to have a couple of sections of felled tree just the right hight. So I rolled them over close to a section of fence, attached a feed trough and a hook, and away we go. Works great for right now. I also rolled another one over for me to sit on. Much more comfortable. Susan
