Anyone heard of a buck like this?

Last fall I bought an 8 month old registered Boer buck. I tried for three months to breed him to my girls. I had two older does and two doelings. He did the deed over and over again but finally in January when they all came into heat again I took them to a Saanen buck. At the last breeding he tried with one of my La Mancha's he didn't even seem real interested. She was rubbing all over him and he just wanted to eat his food. I chalked it up to perhaps too young. However, it is now July and he is showing no signs of being in rut. He smells sweet as a daisy and is exhibiting no buck like activity. I have talked to the breeder and she is willing to take him back and replace him with a different buck. Just wondering if anyone has heard of something like this. He is not running with the girls full time, has a wether friend. I tried hand breeding last year and letting him in full time with them and neither were successful.

It happened to me once with a rather expensive buck. He was really, really inbred, and I blame his lack of libido on that. He was tightly related to one buck 4 times in a 4 generation pedigree, IIRC.

Well, he is not inbred and he wanted to and tried to many times last spring but he must be shooting blanks. Perhaps something went wrong with his hormones that is making him not produce sperm and not act bucky??!! Weird. He is such a handsome guy too

They are just as horny when they're shooting blanks, in general. It could be because he's young, but at 8+ months, he should have been old enough. If the older does have intimidated him, he won't be very interested.

Here is what worked with mine: pen him up separately while they're in heat, and bring him out on a leash to breed them. Baby bucks do not have as much stamina or as much sperm as a mature buck, and if they are overused, they can be infertile for some time afterwards. With a baby buck, you don't want him to breed repeatedly, a time or two per doe is enough.

It might be interesting to have his sperm checked under a microscope......is there enough,.... are active?(motility).... are too many of them deformed?

I was kinda thinking along the same lines only I would take it to the vet & have him check it out.
Good luck with him, I know that has to be a bummer when you get one that can't or won't do his duty. Hopefully it will work out for him & you. Otherwise I'd take the breeder up on her offer to exchange for a new buck.

Does he seem to perk up when you discuss window treatments or play Diana Ross CD's?

Chris had a problem with a younger buck not getting the job done last year as he wasnt interested, hopefully she can say if hes better this year or if she sold him.
Its easy to see sperm or have a vet check him out to tell if its a buck you really like, other than that give him a bit more time to mature.

I have had younger bucks that just weren't that interested. After they got to be yearlings, they were ready and willing. Sometimes they just need to mature.

Several years ago I had a beautiful nubie buck that was very sick as a kid and had decided not to sell him as we didn't know if he was viable. Someone came to the farm and fell in love with him, so we had the vet check him for sperm count. Wow! was he ever potient! To our knowledge he is still producing kids. Just a simple vet check will ease your worries. Also some bucks are shy and will not breed if someone is watching or there is no privacy.

Yes, there are gay bucks and lesbian does-

I know one instance through where it took an electro-ejaculator to get the job done. Once he experienced the rush of orgasm, he was into it.....

Some bucks are not gay, they simply have a very very low libido. The one I had never got terribly excited about does or other males.

The only way I could get him to breed was to pen him alone, and hand breed. If he had to mount more than once, he'd give up, so the doe had to beheld stock still, no teasing. That was such a pain.

However, all the does he bred got pregnant. So, I will repeat. Horny bucks can be infertile, and impotent bucks, if you can get them to breed, can be fertile.
