Unhappy Sick Goat

Hello,
We are trying to figure out what might be wrong with our billygoat. He is lethargic and not eating. He can get up and walk if forced. There is also mucus in his feces. He does not have a temperature. We are awaiting a call back from a vet, but hate to delay any treatment if there is something we can do to help. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Have you checked his gums and mouth in case it is parasites? My first thought was urinary calculi too. Hope you find out what is going on with him.

Mucas in stool can represent hookworms, coccidia, giardia (sp?) or anything else that would need incasing to protect the intestines such as a forign object.
How old is he and has he peeded or attempted to, if its the urinary stones he will arch his back up and strain to pee. Use the FAMANCHA chart to determine if you might be dealing with parasites.
With goats there is so many things that can present the same and be misdiagnosed because of that, the more info the better.
What are you feeding him, does he have access to browse, trash, pasture, or? Has he been breeding or near does in season? Have you checked and made sure theres no poisoness plants that he can get too?

Thank you for all your replies.
He has not peed today. The vet gave him a shot, did blood work, and has given us medicine. He pretty much told us that he will not get better unless he undergoes a major surgery.
Any advice on how to help him without facing surgery? The vet was not hopeful and frankly did not seem happy about treating a goat. He actually told us to let him die and buy another one for 25 bucks. Heartless!!
His main feed is pasture with a mix of grass and clover.
He is about four years old.
Thanks again for your help.

If it's urinary calculi you need to get some Ammonium chloride FAST. Some pharmacies have it.... This is a critical situation. What medication did this vet give you?

The vet said he has a urinary blockage, is that the same thing as urinary calculi? We just gave him the ammonium chloride even though the vet thinks it will not work.

the vet should be able to cut the pizzle off without major surgry and sometimes that allows things to better pass on their own, however Id find another vet.

FIND A NEW VET! One that cares about the patient not the checkbook. I had one of those vets. Would only suggest the most costly solution. The members here are better as a whole than any one vet. Good Luck, I will be sending good thoughts his way. What is his name?

This is horrible, but I have heard that in an extreme emergency, you can cut the string off the end of the penis and if the stone is caught up in there, that will fix the problem. If the stone isn't in that string (there's a proper name for it, but it escapes me just now), then cutting it off doesn't help. He can still breed without it. I have heard of people doing it themselves, but if you can get a vet to do it, obviously that would be preferable.

Of course it will help if you know where in his urinary tract the stone is....good luck, and get a new vet that doesn't punish you for his disdain fo rgoats.

Hopes he gets better soon Don't have any experience in these matters... but he seems too young to be just left to die... Try what you can and keep us updated Good luck!

If it's working, a small amount of urine should start passing, if not, call a different vet.

You need to get another vet to help you with the goat to help you cut the pizzle off(it's the curly thing at the very tip of his penis). I had a buck & my vet helped me do it, it took both of us and an assistant to do it & this was a Nigerian dwarf goat, probly because he was so uncomfortable. It does work & it can safe your buck but it has to be done ASAP! This is VERY SERIOUS & you can loose him very fast to a painful, terrible death if something isn't done soon. I'm really not trying to scare you or sound harsh but I am so passionate about this subject since I have also been through it. I know how you feel & Loved my buck too!

Someone here had the same surgery done & saved her buck & someone else here said they had it done & it prolonged his life but only 6 months. The surgery they are talking about is re-routing the urinary tract.

If your buck is completely blocked already he need's the pizzle cut off & the ammonium chloride & I hate to say it but he still might not make it but I would try if I were you.
I sure hope he makes it & good Luck!!
