My Frosty Girl

I've got one of my favorite milkers in trouble.

Temperature?
100.7

Symptoms?
Every afternoon I go for a walk in the woods and I have four does that follow me normally... all milkers. Three days ago Frosty stayed behind, the temps had been high all day and most of the herd was under a tree or two so I did not think much about it. Yesterday she acted a little unsteady, drunk like, had trouble with her back legs placing them under her as she walked. This morning she had trouble getting up. Once up she is a little unsteady, but follows me around. Eating alfalfa hay, on good pasture, drinking normal amounts of water, vet checked berries yesterday and no worms, gave some nutri-drench, b shot, calcium yesterday morning.

When was the last time you wormed? 15 days... 6cc-Cydectin, 5 days... Ivomec horse wormer at 3X dose

Is she pregnant? No

When did she last have kids?
April 5

Is her milk normal if she is in milk?
Yes milked her out this morning, milk looks fine. Nothing strange. Udder is hotter than other girls, but not extreme.

What age?
4yr

Breed?
Nubian

Do you vaccinate?
Yes

What do her lungs sound like when she is breathing?
Fine, Vet listened and said "she is just a goat", very tired of that phrase.

If this is a kid, is it nursing or on a bottle, goat milk or milk replacer?
She had a buck and doe kid, moved buck kid into separate buck kid pen 2 weeks ago. Doeling was still nursing, until today. I moved her onto bottle.

Have they had a change of grain?
No

How long have you owned this goat?
4 months

Have good mineral mix, BlueBonnet shipped in.

She was sprinkled with dairy delouse a week ago.

Hair has thinned out since kidding, gotten courser, skin dry and rough. Got Bo-SE 2cc when I brought her home as she was like this then and CDT shot.
She is from a herd that I bought in KS, I lost one other doe out of this herd due to deformed fetuses.

Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Trey

The only thing I can think of is the thinning hair, courser feeling, and the rough dry skin sound like copper deficiency to me. I have heard of the mineral your using but not really familiar with it since it's not available in this area. How much copper is in it?
Do you copper bolus your goats? That might be the best way to go for her copper needs.

Have you looked at her gum's or eye lids? She could be anemic. Did you do a fecal on her before you dewormed her? It is important to know what type of worm you are trying to get rid of. Yes you deowrmed her but is it working still because of a over worming usage? Are the worms immune to the meds?

I just read another post where Vicki Mcgaugh told the poster to worm with the horse paste ivermectin at 3 times the dose & do it 3 times at 7 day intervals to break the worms life cycle.
Just like sweetgoats said some worms get used to the wormers & are buggers to get rid of but doing a fecal tells you what your dealing with, especially if your having problems with this goat.

with that low temp and the unsteadiness it really sounds like milk fever/hypocalcemia to me. you need to get some calcium in her FAST. Do not milk her out, ideally injectible CMPK every few hours. read THIS...

trey what is the iodine requirement in your area?
low in iodine and they have trouble keeping the body temperature up. hair will look rough, like a hedgehog standing in all directions.
sometimes you can feel the thyroid, but not always.

another possibility, she got into something poison? low temp is very scary to me.
can you listen to her heart beat? does the rumen still work?

with milk fever and you see a drastic drop in milk production. sounds like she was still milking?

hope you will find out fast what is wrong with you doe
