should I castrate an older buck?

I purchased a small herd of boar-crossed goats recently. The herd contained a young buck which is about 4 months old now. His sire was with the herd that I bought. The young buck is in great condition, but I don't need a replacement buck nor do I want to seperate him out from the rest of the herd.
Should I castrate his now or should I take him to the sale barn?

Goats don't do surgery well, and he is well past the age of easy castration.

Sale barn gets my vote.

Why don't you sell him through the local sale paper? I'm sure someon needs a nice Boer buck, and you have the added advantage of owning at least one of his parents to show.

Around here, goats sell for more intact than castrated. Buyers will buy lots of bucks, then haul them to the cities where they sell for meat. There are Ethnic populations that will only eat meat from "whole, unblemished" animals. If you are taking him to the sale barn, you will probably be better off leaving him a buck.
