Cocci and teeth grinding/Sulmet milk withdrawl

I have a doe who has had runny poo for 3 days now. The other 3 are fine. She has not been eating great, either. She ate some of the kids hay that we threw in with her and at first I thought it might be bad and gave her a tummy ache. But it's been three days. So tonight I dosed her with Sulmet, thinking it might be Cocci. The pen is in need of cleaning (hubby has bad back and the Bobcat is under repair.....)

Anyway, tonight I thought I heard her grind her teeth. I know this can mean pain, but would a goat do this who has Cocci?

Also, is there a milk withdrawl time with Sulmet?

Can you think of anything else it might be?

Dee

What has she been eating?

Have you given her probios?

Does she have a temp?

How old is this doe?

Cocci does cause teeth grinding. But cocci is usually only a problem in youngsters.

My understanding is Sulmet is so diluted it takes a ridiculous amount to work in goats. Corid is good, it's the only one I'm familiar with and it's easy to find around here.

Dosing can be found here: http://dairygoatinfo.com/index.php/topic,9125.0.html

Well I do know that adult goats do have cocci becuz I had some adult goat do have cocci before they kidded. I was surprised becuz I was on the track and make sure they got chemcial wormer and stuff. But I am glad that I treated them with goat aid and it works great! Well my vet always say to me if you use sulmet or any kind of cocci medication and it is a week withdrawal. So I dont know. Maybe you can ask your vet that question..

<<<What has she been eating?>>>> Other than the hay I threw in from the kid's pen, nothing.

<<<Have you given her probios?>>>> No, I haven't. What is that for?

<<<Does she have a temp????? She doesn't seem to. She isn't listless at all. But...she will not let me take it.....and she is strong and my arm is hurting. It was all I could do to get half the sulmet down her with my 13 year old son helping.

<<<<How old is this doe?>>>

She is 2 and she freshened for the first time 3 months ago with no problems.

<<<Cocci does cause teeth grinding. But cocci is usually only a problem in youngsters>>>

I knew that younger goats usually get it. I only thought of it b/c the pen straw is long overdue for a cleaning out. DH is working on the Bobcat, but it's not going as planned.

Great. How much Sulmet would you have to give to be effective? It's what I already have on hand? It's 12.5 percent, I think.

Probios is like yogurt that have acidophulis in it. So you can buy probios in a tube. But yogurt and probios are same thing. They are very good for their stomach and will help with their flora..

Sulmet is a 'coccidia-cide' and Corid is a 'coccidia-stat'.

A coccidia-cide kills the little buggers dead and a coccidia-stat holds them at bay while the animal's immune system builds its' own immunity.

Get a dosing syringe, first thing. Barring that, I give at least a 10ml dose in a syringe w/o needle to a kiddy-winky who is having coccidia issues. I've even been known to give Sulmet and Corid together, plus a deccox feed w/ ammonium chloride. I dose the Corid at 1ml per 15lbs. of kid, and usually keep it up for at least 7-10 days.

Based on the weight of a kid- 25lbs?- determine what your doe's weight is.

Bovatec is also a super med for coccidia.

I have had several adults do this same thing through the years. The only thing that has worked for me is worming with Valbazen. I don't have dairy animals so I don't know about milk withdrawl. I also live in the south where worms are a big problem this time of year. My usual wormer is cydectin. Good luck!

Here's a goat weight chart to figure out the dosage.

Here's the dosage.

http://fiascofarm.com/goats/coccidio...#treatchemical

Put a little sugar in the medicine to make it easier to give otherwise the goat will fight you more.

What kind of hay? She's in milk and getting no grain?

Those old fiasco farm doses are not going to work in most areas, I've been told.

Sulmet would have to be dosed at like 1 cc per lb to have much chance of working I believe.

Give her some garlic. Get some fresh garlic and blend it up in a blender with enough raw apple cider vinegar to make it blend good. Blend until it's like a sauce. Just pull off some of the juice as you use it and give her 1 TBS 2 X per day for a week, you can back down to 1 X per day after 4 days. This would help with bacterial stuff too. I can't say 100% it will work with cocci but it will at the least help if she has it. Something isn't right if adults have cocci.

After the mix has set for a month or more, you can pull it all off and store it. Needs to be out of light.

What minerals does she have?

Oh, mix the garlic extract with apple juice when you give it.
