Collar death - I knew better

We just lost the buck we purchased a couple of weeks ago. He had on a dog collar and got caught on a branch stub. He was dead when we found him this morning at feeding time.

I knew not to use those collars. I knew better. This so stinks. I am mad at myself.

Ouch! I know that hurts. Sorry for your loss. Going out RIGHT NOW to remove the collar from the only goat here that wears one. I also know better!

Aw Alice....I am so sorry You take such good care of your goats. I'm sure you are kicking yourself brutally. Mistakes happen, and I know how you feel. Try not to be too hard on yourself...like some others said, his death may have saved many other goats by you posting this. Hugs to you I'm sure it was just horrible to find him that way. ugh!

Oh man, that's awful. I'm sorry.

I am a bit obsessive about that, no collars on the goats and no halters on the horses. I see horses running around with halters a lot, even rope halters, yikes.

Rose, I'm reading the description, and it *says* it will break away. What our buck had on was a nylon dog collar. Never again.

It's really upsetting. We always put their names and a bell on their collars, and they looked so nice. Looking nice sure pales in comparison to ALIVE. Sigh.

It's going to take me a LONG time to stop feeling bad about this. We were so excited about our breeding plan for the fall. He died an awful death.

I have those exact same collars from Hoeggers. They do break, but not so easily that you can't lead them around with them. Gretta has broken one and Frankie one. And when they break it's no big deal cuz you can just replace the broken link. I like them. They were tied up at the time and got scared and broke away.

I am so sorry……..something similar happened to me years ago. Small pygmy doe wearing dog style collar was jumping from a large stump and managed to hang herself. The thoughts…..should have, could have, if only, why didn’t I, what was I thinking……..all of them that ran thru my mind were almost overwhelming. For my remaining goat, I bought a goat halter.

Thank you for sharing your story, as others have stated – your tragedy could prevent another.

A goat we had got his collar hung on the horns of one of our sheep once. That was some rodeo to try and get them untangled before the goat strangled.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
Some of mine have the nylon collars with the plastic snaps but I think they will all come off tomorrow. Thank you for the reminder.
