Should I be concerned?
I plan to pick up a goat that I've place a deposit on, and I received this from the seller today as we where making plans to pick her up.
"I did notice over the weekend that the goat has a small bump on her jaw. I think it is either a cheat grass swelling or new tooth coming in - but nothing to worry about. But... I did wanted to tell you about it."
She seems like an honest person, but I'm fairly new to goats and I'm trying to limit my mistakes.:baby04:
The goats a year old.
Thanks!

Scott, I think that seller is a very honest person and they would more then likely not tell you something was wrong with it if she was not a honest person. I would just check the goat out when you get there and see what they have to say about it.

Thank you Lori. Just make sure that it's not an abscess?

I would not bring the goat home until you know if it is CL or not. I have seen too many heartaches on this forum from CL and would not take the chance on infecting my property. I know you are excited to get your new goat but it is just so risky...and to me, a lump anywhere would be a red flag.

It depends upon the person. My advice is for you to email TracyinIdaho and me and see if either of us know the person. I know quite a few goat folks in northern Idaho, and my guess is that Tracy knows a lot of them in southern Idaho....
I can think of a few that I would beg you NOT to buy from!

Scott, the area is frightful. All CL that I have seen have been on the jaw/neck line.
Refuse her until you are SURE that it isn't CL. You might offer to pay the seller board when the "nothing to worry about small bump" goes away.
However, I will bet that it grows and matures. Any way to post a picture?

Thanks everyone for all of your help! Unfortunately I cant get down there until Friday to take a look. I did get this back from an email I sent voicing my concerns.
"My whole herd was tested last year and we are completely negative. We have not added any new goats, nor has she had any exposure to other goats, as she has never got to a show or left the farm for any reason. If you'd like to pay for the testing I'll do the blood draw and send it in to the lab. We have tested everyone for CAE this year and I'd be happy to provide that test results to you. I can also give you last year results where everyone was tested for CL as well as CAE."
She also mentioned that the bump is on the upper jaw bone, not under the jaw and it's the size of a BB. If that makes a difference.

I wouldnt use the CL as blood testing. I would have her to take small sample of that lump and sent it to the lab to be sure it is not CL. U know..

I really dislike it when people ask you to pay for the testing, especially when the goat is showing suspicious symptoms. THEY should WANT to know, for the sake of their remaining herd, if not also for the sale of this goat. With the questions on the reliability of the blood tests, if it were my goat, I'd have the vet out to look and definitely draw a sample from the lump for testing ASAP. I also test my entire herd for CL, CAE, & Johne's but I'd still test any and all suspicious lumps.

If it is on the jaw molar-line, it is a hay stick. Think horses not zebras.

As others have said, I wouldn't trust a blood test for CL. If it is on the upper jaw, then it probably is not CL. BB size doesn't remain small for long -if it is CL.

I say from where they re talking about the lump, it is a hay stick or a splinter. I had a wether get one like that and after I lanced it and squeezed all the yuck out, I found a sliver in it. It healed nice.

She tests for CL? Ask to see the papers. She shouldnt be offended. She will probably appreciate it.
Last yr had my herd tested right before breeding season. The buck I was going to use was tested up the Wazu. We both looked over each others test results as protocol, even though we both trusted each other.

I do as Goat Servant does, we always always always provide test results to our buyers without even being asked. It is automatic. We also always always always require test results before we will pick up a goat to bring home and we have worked hard to establish solid, long-term relationships with the farms from whom we purchase. Even if I know them well by now, they know me well enough to know I want proof so I can take it to my buyers.

boer goats
Hi all,
I am new to this group and I hate to change the subject but I am not sure how to post a new topic. I am going to be getting two boer goats in a few weeks. I now have a nubian and lamancha and have for 10 years. I am hearing that the boer is different. I would just like to know if anyone has them and has any advice on them. Also what are you worming them with? Any behaviors that I should know about. My other two are with my horses and I have no problem keeping them in my electric fence. I do plan to get the box fence to fence off a hill that is over grown for these goats. Thanks!

HardWW,
From the Goat Forum page, at the top left of your screen is a "new thread" button. It has a pencil and envelope look to it. Paul
