When to take bucklings off any grain?
I'm talking about little bucklings born this spring. How long do all of you give any type of grain or feed, other than hay or browse?

are you talking about grain grain or a pelleted feed for goats? for a buckling i want to keep I have them on a pelleted medicated meat goat pellet for 4-6 months if they are in a dry lot situation. recently we have moved to much more acreage and the goats have alot of land and I am less concerned with cocci...at least this year..... grains by themselves in general are not good for bucks. most medicated pellets are balanced for the phosphorous and calcium as well as containing ammoniom chloride to prevent urinary calculi. none of which straight grain has. a typical sweet feed...although ca/ph balanced...does not contain the ac.

I just always figured since they were babies & there bodies still growing that they should get some grain just like the little doelings.
I'm talking about grain, not medicated feed from the store.
He is now almost 5 weeks old & he nibbles just on what mom gets each day right now.

The only grain I ever fed mine was medicated lamb creep feed for cocci.

I give my 3 month old buckling a fistful or two of grain (oats and corn) whenever I milk the doe. (They're not related; he's just along for company now, breeding later.)

I give mine grain while they are growing, no much though. Just whole oats and in conjunction with calcium (alfalfa) to balance the phosphorus.

I always feed my bucklings a small ration of grain until they stop growing and to my adult bucks during the stressful seasons of rutt and post-rutt when they tend to be so thin. I am careful to feed alfalfa along with it so as to balance the diet. But yes, my boys get grain as needed.

I feed bucklings medicated feed with Decoxx (in addition to cocci prevention) for a few months then switch to meat goat developer with ammonium chloride to prevent UC. They also get alfalfa pellets with their feed.

Thanks everyone, I didn't plan on keeping him on grain his whole life since I know about UC and all too well but wanted to make sure he gets what he needs while his little body is growing. We have alfafa feilds close to there pen's so they can browse them everytime they are out which is quite often plus they have access to grass, weeds, etc. out back. I also give alfafa hay & grass hay to both the doe's & males here year around.
I would like to read the label off one of those bags with the AC in it though. What's the name of it & company, sometimes you can read those on line?

Emily, I make up my goat feed. It consist's of rolled oats, rolled barley, alfafa pellets & BOSS.
Is Purina the only food that has AC already in it? I really don't like Purina products, used them before & don't want to go back on them & really don't like getting any feed at TSC either. Sorry, if I seem to picky.

I don't like Purina either. No, I have seen *many* feeds with AC in them. I don't remember brands because I don't use any pelleted feeds. But way back when I was looking around for feeds, I remember most of the goat feeds I found had AC included. Of course that is in this area.
