Bottle baby has diarrhea - worried :(
Our 4 week old ND doeling has diarrhea tonight and it looks pretty nasty. She is still active but she has very runny, greenish poo that looks like duck poop.
She is getting thawed goat's milk so not sure what would cause this. Only thing I can think is that her last feeding was cooler than usual. I have been feeding at 110F but the last feeding was room temp.
What to do?

Maybe add yoghurt to her next feeds to help her tummy.

DOnt give the Pepto...have you started her Cocci preventative yet? has she been wormed? What is her temp? theses are important to know before telling you what to do.
If the bottle isnt warm enough then yes it can cause this problem. Has she been eating hay or grain? You need a temp on her.

Have you wormed her yet? Do you have her on cocci prevention? She is right at the age where it will show up if you are not doing prevention. I use DiMethox 40%
For prevention: 1cc per 10 pounds orally the first day, days 2, 3, 4 and 5 use 1/2 the dosage. Do it every 20 days. Count from the first day you started and count forward to 20. Repeat until the kids are six month of age.
For Treatment if they have cocci.
1 cc per 10 pounds orally for 5 days, use banamine to stop spastic intestine.

Repeating the above... cocci treatment should start at three weeks.
Also, don't feed room temp milk if you have been feeding warmed.

I would think a 30-40 degree drop in milk temp could well affect her. But as was stated this is also prime age for cocci overload.

I doubt it is cocci. It is probably the cool milk. Both my bottle babies came down with the runs yesterday because of something I did. They are six weeks old now and having been drinking whole cow's milk and getting some grass hay. The hay is buried under snow right now, I cannot pull that tarp at all! So I gave them each a really small bit of alfalfa pellets. Well sure enough a few hours later gross runs. So in their bottles I did put some baking soda, not that they want to drink much right now. All my other kids started eating those pellets by now and who would have thought it would cause such a mess.
If you want to start her on cocci treatment then sure go ahead but ask the breeder if on her already upset stomach will it make it worse or not.

I talked to the breeder and she was convinced that it was cocci. She said that she had to treat the baby's brother for the same yesterday.
I started treatment today and will continue for a few days.
She has been great about drinking the bottle but I have been prying her mouth open to get it in there. I let her get pretty hungry today and she latched on all by herself this time ;-) Yeah

When you move a baby over 21 days old, you need to immediately start treatment for cocci and worm.

I am happy to say - no more duck poo, so far. I will finish the course of cocci treatment and hope for the best.
I thought my little darling was perfect in every way until she shot green dookie across my kitchen. Bad goatie, bad, bad.

LOL! She was supposed to do that in the bathroom. At least she wasn't on the couch. AND she is still a perfect little princess.

PLEASE be VERY careful with things like pepto - you can stop them up in short order and you may not have time to rectify it once you realize what is happening.

Actually the only reason for not giving pepto is that it darkens the poop and you can miss blood in the poop.
First check your thermometer no kid can drink 110 degree milk Aim for just warmed now that they are older and you can slowly move to room temp milk if you like.
A little baking soda, a tiny pinch, in one bottle a day also helps.
Run your cocci prevention passed us, so we know it's working also, some crazy dosages around. vicki

I have a doe with the green diarea. In my doe I believe it is the green grass growing so fast in the pasture. I think it is the change of diet in mine mabe that is what is wrong with yours. It did not start until the grass really popped up from the rain.

I'm using liquid Sulmet. 1/2 tablespoon a day. She's on her third of four days.
Is that ok? This was the breeder's suggestion.
I am bringing the temp of the milk down gradually as it is a pain to get it so exact.
She has completely normal poo now.
This doeling is a total ham. She loves to run around the house and does that joyful little leap with the clicking of the heels, thing. My wife had a bunch of little girls over today for an event and she was a major hit.

Too much pepto can absolutely stop them up faster than you-know-what. I have seen it clog up kids in mere hours. I have done the necropsy to confirm it and I have consulted with vets. Now of course, if something else was going on, that could have contributed to the issue, but it is not something I have sorted out just yet.
I have read and been told many, many times to just let the diarrhea run it's course *if nothing else is going wrong*. Of course you want to try to find out what's causing the problem, if you can, and you have to treat if something else is off, but pepto is not my preferred route because I have seen it cause problems. Usually if you find and treat the causative problem, like with coccidia, the diarrhea stops too.
cjb - I would have to look up the dosages of the Sulmet to check it. Glad to hear the doe is better, sounds like you have it under control.
