electric net question

I am always so frustrated with any kind of electric fencing
I purchased Electric netting from Premier. Got it all set up. Hooked up my energizer correctly (had called the company and they said the brand I had would work). Plugged it in. Energizer blinking green which means its working. I put a tester on and it indicated 5000. I made my Dh touch the fence..nothing. anywhere. no zap. How can an electric tester/meter say there is voltage going through and we can't feel it. I just don't get it, these kinds of things just never seem to work for me

I had the same problem and simply found that I had the charger wired to the ground and the ground wire attached to the fence. Double check that your connections are backwards-took me a good long while to figure it out, too.

I checked that...my charger clearly says "fence" under one knob and "ground" under the other knob. Isn't weird though that the tester thingy is blinking and we don't feel a shock? grrrrrrrrr

if you dont have it grounded well enough that can happen as well. did you test either with hubby or the tester all the strands?

yes..none of the strands give a shock and the tester says they should. I think I may have to call Premier tomorrow and see what they say.

I recall one of my crazy friends telling me, that as little boys they would pee on electric fences (for cows)... and supposingly this was a good way to test if it works.:banana02: I would not recommend this method for your DH.

I would say to definitly double and triple check the ground, we have extremelly sandy soil here and I needed to put in 3 - 10' ground rods to get a good ground, and as I extend the fence I may need to add more.

If the tester is showing electic in the strands and but your not getting a shock it is because you are not completing the circuit.

How well was DH grounded? If you have a weak current and he is wearing rubber soled shoes he may not get anything. 5000 isn't that weak but it could be what is happening. Have him take off his shoes or wear something with leather soles. The meter has a probe so it get's in to the soil to pull ground. If you have a weak ground and rubber soles he won't feel anything. If you have a really weak ground at the soil surface your goats won't feel it either.

We had to put the whole project on hold. The weather has gone down hill fast and is going to be crummy all week
Hubby is going to get a different ground rod in the meantime.

there is a better way to test it rather than purposely shocking yourself. get a garden tool with a metal end and a wood handle, such as a rake. touch the metal part to the wire and the something else metal such as fence post. if it is working it will arc. you can hear it ticing. if it is dark you'll see it.

I have some of this fence, and it works real good, but not if it is snowy, or if very far from the main line. but I have it hooked into the main power for the cow fences.

I take a wide blade of grass, get it real spit wet and touch the wire with that. You just get a mild tingle that way. The other night I forgot that I had not turned it off, grabbed the gate wire and zapped my breath away. It didn't help that it had just stopped raining and I was standing in a puddle!

With rubber boots or thick rubber soled shoes, you won't feel it.
