Exclamation Doe not feeling well

Goldie kidded on 3/11 with twin doelings without any problems. She is the one that had coccidiosis so bad when I got her and she is still hard to get a hold of so I do not have a temp on her. Her ears and under her leg are very cool so if any temp difference I would suspect that it would be low. She is still nursing her twins but her udder is not as full looking as before.

Yesterday I gave her B12 and 1 cc of Banamine because she was not eating and kept stretching like she hurt. I did see her drink and eat some alfalfa after the banamine. Poop and pee were normal. Eyes membranes are red - cydectined at kidding, val...(sp) last Fri.

Today I have not seen her eat or drink anything. Poop and pee are still normal. She looks like she has lost weight. I gave her some selenium/E gel this morning along with B12 and banamine.

Could this be ketosis? Any suggestions?

If this is what it is, she can be saved if you start treating her NOW

Thanks Bearfootfarm. That is a good article. I have the calcium gluconate but not CMPK. I am going to go and see how much I can get into her by myself. Better some than none I hope. I know that I caught this early - hopefully I can correct it. Cathy

You can tell if Ketosis....smell her breath...if Ketosis her breath will be very sweet smelling like pears/apples. Good luck with her.

I put 30cc of calcium gluconate SQ. She has a lot of fight in her. At first I could not get a hold of her enough to inject her and not me so I put some calcium paste in her mouth - she hated that so much that she let me SQ her, give her some water, she wanted a couple of handfuls of oats(did not want to give her more), drank more water, ate some peanut & alfalfa hay leaves, drank some more water. All in little quantities but I was happy with that.

I will try smelling her breath later - right now she smells like calcium paste.

She is back to being pathetic. I can get her up, she walks fine, fights hard but is not eating. Gave her 20cc of calcium gluconate(she freaked out and I could not get more into her), B12 and selenium/vit E paste. The calcium paste seems to gag her so I am not going to use that anymore.

Her doelings seem to be hungry. They will be 2 weeks old tomorrow - should I attempt to bottle feed?

I have been treating her every 2 hours but with the calcium gluconate. She is not showing any improvement. I think that the CMPK is going to be a must. The vet was closed by 6 PM - I will call in the morning.

Goldie is a small goat with twins, I have not been milking her and she is fed alfalfa and peanut hay along with free choice alfalfa pellets. Her grain is oats, barley and BOSS. They have lose minerals with copper and were copper bolused about 4 months ago. Worms have not been a problem since the copper bolusing - but they still have been given wormer at kidding.

I started bottle feeding her twins tonight and they took to it right away.

Well at least you didn't have to struggle with getting them to take the bottle...I hope Goldie is doing better but even if she is I would still get the CMPK. Poor girl

Really bad this morning. I have already given her 60cc of the CG and also started her on lacated ringers(do not know why I did not think of that yesterday). Off to vet to get CMPK

Oh Cathy - I am so sorry. I know you tried everything. At least you know her kids will take the bottle.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing the ewes is harder than losing the babies, that's for sure.

I thought that I had her stable when I went to the vet. Her girls had been fed, she was covered up in warm towels, I had given her all the meds that I had. She was very small when I got her. I thought that all goat babies were small. I now realize that she had never been wormed or vaccinated because they could not catch her. She is happier now and her girls will grow up being very friendly.

I'm so sorry. It really sounds like you went the extra mile for her. I'm sure she knew that and was appreciative.
