Hairless/goitered/weak babies died

The strong of the two died this morning(weak one died friday morning). She stopped eating altogether, we tried a number of different things to get her eating again, but nothing seemed to work. She(the doe) seemed to get stronger and tried to stand yesterday morning, but then went downhill lsat evening and then this morning.

I am in contact with Texas A&M and will try to send them the bodies to see if I can find out why all this happened.

Big thanks to all who gave me ideas and opinions, you all are great.

Take care,
Joe

I'm sorry. That's such a big disappointment for you. I hope you get some answers from the necropsies. Please let us know, it's important to share the information.

This is a second hand story but something similar went on here a couple of years ago. The kids were born with goiters- the bucklings all died at birth or were born dead- the doelings did better but they had subsequent problems.

The problem turned out to be flixweed (or flicksweed?)in the alfalfa hay. It was a thyroid inhibitor (I think.) UC Davis came up with the diagnosis but the lady involved lost most of her kid crop. The weed is found in early cutting alfalfa. It's a small scraggily weed with small legums type pea pod with lttle seeds in it.

If JCran checks in, she has really good knowledge of this.

Sorry- just found your earlier thread and it was already covered. I do hope you get a answer from the University.
