How long?....
...until your milk starts tasting a litle goaty after being in the fridge?
I keep my fridge colder than 40 degrees, I am doing everything right as far as udder/teat washings and dips, etc etc. My goats milk (FF saanen) tastes amazing, clean and fresh for 2 days in the fridge, then on the third day it has a very faint, barely detectable essence of goat flavor on the aftertaste. I have read that it should remain fresh and clean tasting for up to five days in the fridge with no off flavors. I have not had any LSU subclinical staph tests run, but I do run home CMT mastitis tests and there is no mastitis showing up there. We all drink it raw (even when it had the slight "essence of goat" going on) and we are all fine, no belly aches or anything.
I clean all my milking supplies in the dishwasher and then rinse everything with bleach water before I milk and store. I milk with sterile gloves on. Viola is healthy and fit and happy. Oh, only thing we have here that could be throwing it off is a buckling still nursing her and he does smell a bit. We are going to wether him this weekend and separate him from his mother when we get a breeding buckling in 3 weeks. I'd like to do it now but he'd be lonely and I am not yet up to milking twice a day.
Anyway, how long does your typically keep raw in the fridge without haveing any off flavors?
Thanks
Alisa~
