Question Took my Babies to the vet today

I took them to have them disbudded, i called and they said they did disbudding. I get there and they are like...we put them to sleep and cut them out and then stitch them back up. OH i say...I thought ya'll said you disbudded...that is disbudding he says i told him i thought having them burned with a iron was disbudding....he said OHHHH well we have an iron...so they go in the back and when we get back there..its a huge iron he uses the side of the iron to burn off the buds of my babies....oh my goodness were they upset and now Elle Mae has an open burn in the middle of her noggin i feel bad, they seem to not notice it and are doing good. The vet siad they didn't need a tetnus shot, what do ya'll think, i've read where an open wound can lead to tetnus. What other shots should they have had today? I'm guessing that his vet doesn't know to much about goats. All responses are welcomed thanks for the advice.

The babies should get tetanus antitoxin. Get yourself a goat disbudding iron. If you can't get a goat breeder to show you how to do it, at least you'll have the proper instrument for the vet to use.

I was looking at the prices for the disbudding irons since I got home...put hubby to work on a kid box. I doubt that they will be going back to that vet. I knew they should have had shots I can give shots, can you get this med from the feed store? Thanks

I'd be guessing you'll see scurs. I have never heard of disbudding in this fashion. Normally you want to see a good copper ring. How long did he hold that iron on, and how big a spot did he cover? Just wondering...

Thank you! Also, My doe kidded almost 3 week sooner than I thought and I had just bought the vaccine and had not given it to her yet, would it be ok to give it to her now? I have wormed her and she does have scours starting today, other than that she is still eating, drinking, and being a good mom. I feel like a total dummy for not getting this vaccine into her, but I could have sworn she wasn't due until April 1st.

You normally give the doe the shot so her kids will have temporary immunity. I am not sure if it comes through in the milk to the babies. If your doe is up to date on her vaccines she should be fine. IF she isn't then I would give the shot now.

I sure would appreciate it if a vet isn't sure about goats, if he would look it up, call a colleague or not at least not guinea pig my animal. I questioned a vet about the treatment he was about to give my goat and his response was, "well it's only a goat. They're not worth anything anyway." I took my girl home, did some internet research and fixed her up myself. Good luck with your babies.

There is a wonderful vet in Tifton, Dr. Angie McDaniel and a good vet in Reidsville, Dr. Lynn. If you'd like numbers, pm me. Paul

I have had the same experience with my vets, essentially.

My 'big' one was with inducing labor in one of my does. He gave me the lute at the proper dosage, but then gave me 20 cc dexamethasone to give her. 20 cc! That's too much for a HORSE! I didn't give it, of course. The doe was absolutely positively 5 days overdue, she didn't need it really. I did give 5cc of it, which is the proper dose. The sad thing is, dex is known for lowering the blood calcium levels... Yeah, overdosing on that sounds great for a DAIRY animal. *sigh*

He also diagnosed one of my does with severe diarrhea with pneumonia. Then I remembered I hadn't wormed her after kidding so I wormed her and the problem cleared up. He also doesn't know ANYTHING about goat diseases or testing.

In other words, it's more worthwhile to learn all you can about treating your own animals than to pay someone who doesn't know diddly about them to possibly kill them for you.

I find the lack of experience in this field disheartening. I am going to school in the hopes of becoming a vet...I plan on specializing in large animal care. But from what I've seen so far they might know how to take care of cows, and horses, but sheep and goats are being left out. I hope to find out why this is when i get further along in my schoolin...1st year here. I did find out that I would have to finish out my schoolin in a different state, as Arkansas does not have a vet program currently.

Find out if you can specialize in goats! You will most definitely be in demand.

Yup, another future livestock vet here too. Sadly, I sold the dairy herd so I had TIME to go to college. I feel it's better to concentrate on my education right now.

I plan on becoming a large AND small animal vet, and hope to specialize in ruminants/goats. I also want to study ranch management, agriculture, and possibly equine sciences. Lots of schooling left to go!
