Help!!!how Long Does The Doe Have Colostrum???
HAD anotther baby just now
mama doesnt seem to want anything to do with her. But her aunt just had a baby maybe 36 hours ago. Does she still have colostrum we could give to the newborn. PS New mama doesnt seem to have any milk at all.

I believe it's about 3-4 days, so the other doe should still have some. Keep working on the mother, though, if you can - the antibodies are specific to their kid. The other doe's colostrum is better than none, of course.
Good luck!

Obviously your kid needs colostrum now. There are powdered mixes available at feed stores and also a homemade recipe for it, though can't compare to mom's.
What are you feeding your lactating does? It's unusual that both mothers wouldn't have much milk.

Unless a replacement colostrum has Ieg levels written on the package, and if they contained these actual antibodies they would state it, it is better to just put them on whole milk than to use replacements or concotions made up at home that would never been fed to a small ruminant if you knew the mechanics of how their tummy works.
The first 12 hours of colostrum is of course the best....from 12 to 24 it's transitional milk, but it still has colostrum. It is doubt ful that a doe who kidded 36 hours has colostrum left in her milk, certainly not any valuable colostrum unless her kids have only been nursing one side and you have no milked it out.
After 12 hours, colostrum feeding is a waste of time, your better off using warm milk and a baby glycerin supository to make sure all the meconium (first tarry black poop is out of them). Or put a few drops of kero into each milk bottle for awhile. Vicki

oK I RAN THE 40 MILES into town and got colostrum replacer. Gramma goat had no colostrum left in her milk...and have you ever tried to milk a boer??? LOL. Teeny tiny teats. Baby ate about 4 oz and pooped her merconium. Shes up and running, so to speak.
I feed all my mamas free choice alfalfa and cob in the mornings. SO its not a question of nutrition. This new mama had an infection and she was on antibiotics for the last 2 weeks. I'm thinking that had something to do with no milk? She kicked the baby away and ran from it...we tried 3 times to get anything out of her at all with no luck. Shes out there eating, passed her afterbirth and not missing this baby at all.
When shes had a chance to rest, (and me,lol) I will introduce you to Fox Hollow's Casseopia

What about plasma? My understanding was you can draw blood from a goat and let it separate in the fridge and feed the plasma, has the same antibodies? Kinda far fetched, but just an idea.

She's adorable!
Sorry, I didn't realize not all colostrum replacers didn't have those antibodies. The one I used did and I wrongly assumed others did. That's why I love this forum.
