Prevailing Winds and Barn Placement

Hey all you goat people. My first post in the goat forum I think

My husband and I have gone over it and gone over it and it looks like the only place on our oddly-shaped land to put the goat barn is going to make the house somewhat downwind from the barn. It's the only place where we'd really be able to just drive the truck up and unload hay without having to drive through the only grass/lawn area we have for the kids.

Is that just the worst idea ever? We're not sure how to make it work otherwise but if we get told it's going to be horrible we'll go back to the drawing board. Ugh this weird shaped land. lol.

Are we going to severely regret this decision if we are downwind from the barn? Or at least how much would we regret it?

Welcome to the goat forum...Our barn is north and a little east from our house and I don't have any problems with that. We have 2 horses, 3 goats and 8 chickens that are kept in the barn at night. We also keep it clean...the only thing that ever stinks is when the horses pee inside and it's damp out. The goats are no problem at all. How many critters are you planning on having? I would only worry about a feedlot being up wind from us

My goats are in the barn that is under our house. It is never really smelly at all. I think that keeping a goat in your barn would be less smelly than keeping a large dog in your barn.

My kidding barn is 6 feet from my back door. In bad weather, I shelter all the goats there (24). It doesn't smell at all. To me. It could be I'm used to it.

WOOHOO! Thanks guys. Honestly we're pretty easy going about that kind of stuff but there was this part of me that was afraid everyone was going to say it was the worst thing ever. I feel so much better. Honestly I looked and looked and couldn't find another way. Thanks loads. I'm sure I'll be posting a lot in a few months.
