pictures of bad udders wanted
Does anyone have any pictures of does with bad attachments? I am trying to decide if my Nubian has a good udder or a bad one. It will be her first kidding and while its not full it is good sized. I've been told it will get really big after she kids, and that some first fresheners don't get as big beforehand.

If you can post a pic of your doe's udder, I'm sure the experts can tell you what is good and what is bad about it.
I had a doe who would have been classified as having a "poorly attached udder"... but she was by far my best milker. I kept her for that reason.

Get out the camera for sure, lets see her
For home milking a bad udder attachment isn't a problem that I've noticed. It turns into a problem if you want to show her. You can breed for better attachment. A bigger pet peeve is length and ease of milking the udder for me. I hate to milk itty bitty teats.

Her picture is posted on the "first freshening udder" post. She will be used for home milking only but her babies may be shown if they're prospective owners want to. Shes a PB non registered Nubian but the babies will be Nubian x Boer. I was just curious as to what a bad udder was. Is this only pertaining to showing?

Well, yes and no. For showing, that udder better be close to perfect or you don't have a chance. For practical reasons, ie home-milking, you can be a little more forgiving. It mostly boils down to capacity, functionality and longevity. If the doe has really poor attachments, she may end up with an udder dragging on the ground, which means she'll step on it, or other goats will step on it, and she'll get injured. (A friend of mine calls that "zucchini udder") Ginormous sausage teats are hard to milk and hard for the kids to suck on If the udder is grossly lopsided, you're obviously not going to get a lot of milk out of the one side.
If the udder is a little less than perfect, but she's easy to milk and has good capacity - nothing wrong with that!

a bad udder attachment is a problem even for only home milker if they have to browse and jump a lot. injuries and mastitis are then becoming a problem.
a bad udder in a home milker situation could be/ should be supported with a bra like bag to prevent injuries

That is so funny, a goat bra, I'll have to look for that
I guess it depends on how bad the attachment is. The one that I have really doesn't have any physical problems, it is just esthetic, but I can see how one that is really bad would cause actual physical problems.

Ok, this one is really bad - here's an udder with barely ANY attachments.
This is a 5 year old Boer/Alpine/Nubian. She was in early labor (with twins) in the first pic. The other 2 pics she had triplets on her. She is now retired in a wonderful pet home.

Well I can honestily say my does udder is nothing like that so thats a good thing. Her udder is really high up. Do goat bras really help? I still have a hard time picturing a goat in a bra.

I've seen them either in the Hoegger's catalog, or maybe PBS? Google it, but don't use the word "bra" or you'll get all sorts of unrelated hits.
When we first had goats, we were given a goat that not only had TERRIBLE udder attachments, she had multiple nipples, but ya know what? ALL those nipples gave milk--I'm not lying!! Unfortunately she had a really bad attitude and was always beating up the other goats, so she became a "freezer goat".

Wow, that first one I see how that could lead to serious physical problems while browsing! Mine with a not great attachment is nothing even close to that bad.
I'll let someone more experienced critique shyanne's but her udder looks fine to me, as far as attachment.

Not bad, but not great. I would love to read what others think. From the rear pic.......the attachment seems low, and the udder could be wider.
From the side, the attachment looks good.
The pic showing the foreudder...............I was surprised. Unless I am just not seeing things correctly......it looks to me like she has a very large pocket.
I don't like the teats pointing "out."
I am trying to breed for show quality. I would not keep her. I would like to be able to put my hands on her to assess the area of attachment. You did not tell the age of the goat. For a family milker, I would be concerned that, if the udder has a small area of attachment, then her udder may turn into a "saggy baggy sally" in a couple years.
Just my amateur opinion......................

Yes, it's downright hideous, isn't it? And I did buy her a goat bra but it wouldn't stay on. She kept falling out of it, needed a bigger "cup size" I guess.

She is a F.F. she is 1&1/2 years old.
What do you mean by a large pocket? I dont know goat udder terms yet.
Here is another pic from the rear for a better look. Also earlier in the day before she kidded.

The fore (front) udder, ideally, should extend forward so that it blends smoothly into the abdomen. The center of the foreudder should be attached futher forward than the sides of the fore udder.
I may not be looking at the picture accurately, but it looks like the center of the foreudder is attached behind the sides of the foreudder. That leaves you with a concave-shaped area on the front of the udder.
I don't know if I am doing a very good job of describing this. It is nice if you visit soomeone who has goats with really nice udders......
(Actually, the best time to assess her udder is after she has been fressh for 1-2 months.)

I don't know if this helps. I just found these pics on the internet. These are from the web site for a herd named Munchin Hill. The does name is Peek A Boo. It shows a very nice udder.....with nice extension of the foreudder.
