Toooo many Boers

I'm having a heck of a time selling off our meat goat herd. I really would rather do dairy goats and have started a little herd (Thanks, Emily and Susie!) In the meantime I have around 20 Boers with about half of them due to kid in about a month and a half.

Apart from taking them to the sale barn, where do you all go to sell your goats?

I haven't had any luck selling my Boers. People around here tell me that my Boers are bigger and beefy(er) than most but still no sales. I am keeping two of the yearling does and taking the rest to the sale next month. Too bad too, as the fullblood bucks are really nice commercial bucks. I just can't feed them anymore. I have returned to my first love dairy goats( 3 LaMachas) I will raise LaBoers with my two yearlings.
Good luck on selling your Boers.

I am planning on putting my sale goats in the freezer. I think there was a bit of a boom on boers and it hit a peak, between that and the major crackdowns on illegals there isn't as much market for direct sales and no one is wanting to invest in breeding stock in this economic turmoil, everyone is trying to sell anything that requires feed.. the sales are where they are puchased for the legal ethnic meat market. take em to the sale. I don't want to do that at this point, I'd rather eat them myself.

You have to know how to market your animals, if you are selling for meat, you need to contact any butcher, and high class restraunts as if the chef will buy, the butcher will butcher. Ethic and good ol boys keep us without uneeded goats, With the US still importing more than 7 million dollars worth of the stuff there is a market. Even if you sell to holistic pet food companies.
What gets my top dollar for my goats is the fact i do not vaccinate mine, and feed a primarly an all alfalfa &browse diet

We're in Southeast Missouri - and I'll sell cheap

I like the ideas presented here - I'll give some of them a try. I never thought about selling to restaurants. We don't have any around here that offer anything other than an "old country buffet", which doesn't include goat meat, but maybe further north would be an option.

I see a few on your website I wouldn't mind taking home... I don't think I can convince the fiance to do 2 3 hour road trips this weekend.

They're doing great, Susie... and they sure are little lovey things. I don't think I've had this many goat cuddles before! They're not liking the new nipples, or maybe they're just slow eaters. They'll figure it out eventually. The little dark girl (Penny Lane) and the little buckling from Emily's gang (Jude) are in total puppy love. Haha.. I just realized that saying their names together, "Penny and Jude", sounds like the title of a Jonny Depp movie if you have a bad cold. tee hee!

ahhh Penny Lane, how cute. What are you calling the other girl? They've been drinking out of a pritchard niipple, so it may take a little bit.. also, yes they are slow eaters.. as in SPOILED ROTTEN !!! they are used to being held and allowed to take their time & enjoy their bottles.. granted.. there are some drawbacks to letting them eat like that.. (a *** LOT** of my time is spent feeding somebody LOL.. but I enjoy baby-ing them) .... We actually had Benny & Joon year before last.. good movie.. As for Penny Lane.. and Hey Jude... pefect.. One of the doelings I'm keeping is going to be named Dear Prudence !

This goat buyer is in Koshkonong Missouri. I don't know anything about them, but I've seen the sign.

Are there a lot of sheep in your area? Here, I can take my goats to a sheep buyer. The guy my FIL sells his lambs to will buy dairy goats for $.90 a lb, boer crosses for $1.00 and boers for $1.10. This is a common thing here, but there are millions of sheep here.
