Oh, rats, Abby! Of course you are asking about chickens, but I was hoping there was some information about the sex of kids, and how to get does instead of bucks! My friend has been getting almost all bucks this year, and asked me if I knew of any REAL tried and true methods. Hah. Jan in Co

Geez, you guys...

Jan, getting does to have the gender that you want them to is very easy. You just sit down with them before breeding and have a serious little chat about how much a little doe would mean to you. Then go to the buck and explain to him that you only want doe sperm and you'll be all set.

Oh, wait, that was a dream I had.

Actually..... We have improved our doe/buck ratio by only breeding the doe at the beginning of her cycle. AM/PM and then AM again. No breeding after that, no matter how much she yells.

In theory, the doe may not have dropped her eggs yet (at the beginning of the cycle) so the fast swimmers (the male sperm) arrive at the destination and look around and no one is at the party - so they die. The slower swimmers - the female sperm - arrive at the same time the egg does and wa la - more does.

We pen breed our Boers and are 18 - 18 bucks and does. Last year our Saanens produced 22 does and 6 bucks. They are the ones we only bred at the beginning of the cycle.

I had two different longtime breeders tell me this (One older breeder quite bluntly told me to "quit breeding them so much!" ). We'll see if it works again this year!
