Wish me luck and fertility

Well.. not me - the goats. I don't need any more two legged kids.

"Hawk" a white Nigerian Dwarf came over to "play" today and is running with 4 out of our 5 does: 1 ND and 2 standard does. We'll see if I have better luck this time.

To play it safe, I hauled one Ober cross to the breeder's house and she will be hand breeding her to an Ober buck. I WANT BABIES!

The last ND I brought over was kind of lazy about the girls. This was charged right in and made a complete fool and pig of himself over them. None of them are receptive today, this first day, but I think he is likely to get the job done. I guess he is over the standard height for a Nigie so maybe he'll have an easier time of it then the other one.

Unfortunately, he is pure white which is my least fav goat color (no offense to you white goat lovers). However, all her ND does are colored and she said that every kid that he has fathered with her does have been either solid or solid with white. We'll see.

Well - here's hoping!

Cliff

Good luck!! I'm right with you on the colour...not a white fan myself, except in Boers.

Good luck and be fertile!
Maybe the buck is really a dark color but his spotting factor is so extreme that covers the entire goat.

Ha! I like the comment about the spotting factor. I saw one of his kids and he was nearly all brown with some great white splashes.

I am optimistic since this guy is a bit taller than the last and he is one... anxious guy.

have you considered not running the buck with them and hand breeding them so you know he gets the deed done? or is that not an option. I was wondering when I opened this thread if I would be wishing you a wild good time tonight and offer up some oysters

You may want to read up on the color genetics for NDs on this site:

http://members.cox.net/foxcroft/genetics.htm

It will help you to understand what type of "white" you are seeing on this buck (extensively spotted overcoat or base coat) and whether or not it is dominant. Might help you guess at what colors you could end up with.

DQ - Lol. I have never had a person problem with fertility - believe me. However, if I grew a beard and wizzed in it, it might have the opposite effect than that of the billy goat's. ;-) Ok, that was gross.

I am running the buck with the does because I usually can't tell when my does are in heat. Some are obvious, some are not and I am gone all day at work and usually at least 1-3 nights per week so could easily miss it.

Thanks for the genetic color link. I'll take a look. The owner of the buck said that he has never thrown an all white kid when bred to colored does so we'll see. Our ND does is black with tan markings where a doberman would have, plus her underbelly. I love her coloring. The other does are ober colored, which is pretty dominant.

Doing the ancient fertility dance for you. It involves rubber chickens and...well, nevermind all that. Hoping he gets the job done!

Ask to what color does the buck was bred.

Of course, now that he's here, our freezing cold weather has warmed up drastically. If these girls don't go into HARD and obvious heat, I'm going to make burritos out of each and every one of them.

The does that produced either solid or spotted babies with this all white buck were all solid.

Way, way too complicated for me. How bout you figure it out for me? ;-)

Pure white buck bred to:

Black/Tan ND doe (with tan belly)
Light red doe
Ober colored does

I'm wondering if the light red doe is likely to just have white babies since her base color seems to be white ( just the tips are red ).

Yep, you did say solid, but what color solid? Genetically, white, red, tan, and gold are all the same.

You can tell more from the does to whom he was already bred than from the does that have not yet delivered. If he was bred to genetically different colors (non-white and see comment above), then he would have a better chance of telling if he is white *only* because of extensive spotting (as opposed to both spotting and white base coat or just white base coat).

I am learning a lot about this but still have MUCH to learn so having me figure it out for you won't be a good plan either.

He was used to make "mini-obers" and every single one was born either completely ober colored or ober colored with white on chest or maybe chest and head.

Bred to a chocolate/tan ND, the babies were all either chocolate/tan or the chocolate with some white patches on head, chest and the occasional leg. From what I can see, he doesn't seem to sire all white goaties. However, one of my does is "red" and pretty frosty white about the face so they may have an ugly white baby or two ;-)

Bucks on that first day "in with the girls" crack me up. Of course, I'm not sure if the tears in my eyes are from laughter or the buck stink.

Oh, he was so obnoxious. The last billy didn't pay much attention to the girls and we got no babies so I"m a little more hopeful this time.

My daughter was just offered a free ND buckling with very nice genetics.

She said "No thanks, White isn't my favorite color."

They explained who he is line bred on ,a red buck.

My daughter said, "Well, red isn't really my favorite color either."

She is waiting for a buckling that she put a deposit down on to be born.

I sure hope he doesn't end up white or red!
