AI for goats

Artificial insemenation is often used with breeding cattle, but how about for goats? I have Spanish goats with cashmere hair but do have a buck and would rather not have to build a seperate pen for one. And there are nearby farms with cashmere in northern Alabama. Anyone k ow of ai usage in breeding goats?

There are semen banks for goats. AI is used alot in goats. Search the internet for goat semen. You should be able to find what you want. They will list all kinds of important info about the buck so you can improve your herd. They will also tell you what kind of equipment you need for semen storage and transport.

You are right. Goat semen is available for a lot of different breeds. However, I cannot find any for cashmere fiber goats.

REI here in Oklahoma does goat/sheep semen. Might give them a call. . .

For the technical aspect of it go to dairygoatinfo.com there is tons of stuff in the discussion forum but also goatkeeping 101. There is buck collection everywhere. Is there a cashmere association like with goats? That would be the best place to start, commerical folks, show folks etc...they certainly are doing AI. But I don't know anyone, who either dabbles in AI or is hardcore like a few of the gals on my forum, who don't keep bucks, not all does/ewes are candidates for AI. Vicki
