Guessing Game
This is the second year I have done this on a cow forum I am part of. They enjoyed it last year, so I thought I might have it play out here as well.
This was originally posted on the other forum on January 2nd.
Our does are due to start kidding in less than three weeks and since it seemed like people had fun last year, I thought I would host another guessing game.
The way this works is I post pictures of does at two-three weeks before their due dates and you guess what day you think each will kid, how many kids and what gender(s). If you get at least one aspect of any of them right, you win a bar of my goat's milk soap of the scent you chose!
No worries if others chose the same thing as you. Repeats are welcome!
Answers (except the due date) can be changed up until the doe delivers.
I will post updated photos about a week before they are due.
Onto this year's does! All of these photos were taken this afternoon (January 2nd).
A. Jacobea
Jacobea is 1/2 Boer, 1/4 Spanish and 1/4 Nubian. She will be two years old this year and is carrying her first full term pregnancy (having aborted her first pregnancy early on this past Summer). She is due 1/14/09. She is settled to our Fullblood Boer buck, Sparky.

She is a big baby. Stealing milk out of the bull calves' buckets when they get their milk. Bottle raised, clearly. lol No need to point out the poor rear udder. I'm well aware. lol She also has cluster teats...
B. Leda
Leda is 1/2 Nubian and 1/2 Alpine. This will be her second freshening and she is three this April. Dad and I were sorting goats to bring up to the barn last January and both of us agreed she did not look like she was due in less than a week. Well, a week later, after the coldest night of the year that far, I went down to discover she had delivered a single buck kid out of her own sire. She is settled to our Boer/Saanen buck, William, since I was wanting her bred before she got any fatter and the only other option was her sire at that point. She is due 1/16/09. I'm, of course, kicking myself now for my lack of patience in my decision on who to breed her to.

The ear to her left belongs to her full younger sister born this past July. Airplane ears, just no way around them. I was not pleased with Leda's insistence on flaring them for the photo. Leda will be sold this year as I have three full sisters to her. She's already been milked before and responded perfectly the other night when I went to feel her udder. Any doelings will be available this year.
C. Elegance
Elegance is my favorite doe to milk in the herd. She is not the tamest but her udder and teats are perfect for hand milking and she was giving me 6 pounds a day with one of her kids on her. Her milk went in to some of the soap I have made this year. Elegance is 3/4 Nubian and 1/4 LaMancha/Alpine. This is her fourth pregnancy and she will be 7 this year. She did not take her first two years of life and about got her self sold. She has produced three sets of twins thus far. 5 does and a buck. One long eared and one elf eared in each litter. She is settled to our Senior Polled Nubian herdsire, Rudy, and is due 1/16/09 as well. Her dam, Danielle, will be 10 this year and was the first kid I saw born and was our first bottle baby. Danielle is currently our oldest homegrown doe since we lost Utopia (born three days prior) this past summer. Danielle was my favorite milking doe until her daughter joined the herd. This is a repeat breeding for Elegance and we retained one of those daughters (Genevieve-P) and Jylli63 purchased the elf eared twin (Shiloh). All doelings will be available this year.
We have a doe due the 12th; one the 13th; Jacobea the 14th; Leda, Ele and another due the 16th; two due the 17th; two due the 18th; one due the 21st; one due the 26th and two due the 27th. Mixed in are two cows due the 25th and one cow due the 26th.
The other 50 odd does will be due from mid-March through...well, we are still breeding...lol
Good luck and have fun!
---------------------------------------
I will be posting photos taken later today. We are less than a week from Jacobea's due date and a week from Leda's and Elegance's. We have Classification for the cows this afternoon so pictures won't be posted until much later.

A. Jacobea: the 13th, triplets, 2 bucks and a doe
B. Leda: the 16th, twins, 1 doe, 1 buck
C. Elegance: the 12th, twins, both does, with one long earred and one elf earred (because one elf ear and one long ear on each one would just be weird looking ).
I like the udder on Ele.

The more pics and the more interaction I have with my friend's Lamanchas the more I'm falling in love with them! I remember seeing them the first time and wondering what happened to their ears! Looked a bit like ET. Now I think they are gorgeous!

Anyone else?
You don't lose anything by guessing and you only stand to gain (if you are interested in goat's milk soap that is).

Well now I know when they're all going to be born - between Thursday night and Friday morning, I don't envy you.
I see the doe babies going into the house!

We've got -10 for Thursday night according to our "Neighborhood Forecast."
The Prevention babies will go to the house but then they always go to the house for the first week..lol...the others will likely just be kept locked in the barn.
First kid of the season was born yesterday. She's doing just fine today despite the cold temps.
Surely you want to be kidding too right now, Kim?

Well sure I do - as long as dh will give up half the garage and a small heater! Shucks, guess I'll just have to wait until April unless I find a heavily pregnant doe that I can't live without before then.
At least we're not in MN where they said it was -47, UGH!!
So who kidded?

Kim,
I told you yesterday...lol
The doe who kidded was April. She is half Boer and half Fainter cross (I am just about positive Hildi is part Fainter, Kim). April's dam arrived here from Kim's bred with April and her twin brother.
Anyways, she delivered a single 7 pound doeling yesterday out of our Fullblood Boer buck, Sparky;

I'm pretty sure one of the above does will be kidding today, but I dasn't say who since there is still time to guess...lol
