The First Day of Nine Months of Winter Pics - Goats

Gabby and Cody enjoy our first "real" snow. Last year we had over 550" of snow!

My friend's LaMancha's.....I fell in love with these guys when I filled in milking. The larger one tried to trick me. She jumped up on the milking stand before I figured out she wasn't being milked. Of course, she ate all the grain! Sneaky girl!

The male on the left is only 6 1/2 months old. He's gonna be a big boy.

They look great. I really like your barn set up. I am doing something very close to your gates for my new barn.

The barn with the LaMancha's is my friend's. It's an exact duplicate of the historic Steamboat Barn featured in many skiing magazines.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does one do with over 45 ft of snow? Seems like much of life would take place strictly indoors?

Because of our location our snow is known as "champagne powder". Light and fluffy and a world class ski resort. As it falls it compacts so it's not like having 45' on the ground at one time...but it is really, really deep and the fences disappear. Last year my husband had to dig a trench to keep the dogs in and he shoveled paths for the goats. I'll try to dig up pictures. There have been years people put flags on their antennas so they could be seen turning corners. Because of plowing the snow is piled really high on both sides of the drive and it's like driving through a tunnel.

Also you can't just walk across it. I made that mistake out in the goat pen last year and because the snow is light it sinks around your boots and you feel like you are in concrete. I had to actually swim across the snow bank to get out. I remember thinking, "oh crap...hubby is asleep and I'm going to freeze to death out here."

What do people do? Umm...they ski, snowmobile, snow shoe, cross country ski, and moan and groan and wait for summer. This year it snowed all the way until June. In fact my birthday is on June 11th and that was the final snow.

Thank you for sharing the pictures. Do the goats have ears? Now I understand why the weather people will claim a dumping of snow came from Colorado. We seem to enjoy the snow here and frozen lakes, up until about March. Then people start to get a bit cranky about it and say "Enough is enough!" Though it is pleasurable being out on a warm day with a good snow cover. After hearing about all that powder snow, I will be more patient with the heavy packing snow.

My goats are angoras and do have ears. My friend's goats are LaMancha's and have teeny ears. I would be a bit concerned with the bitter cold but they seem to do well.

Our winters are long but the summers are so beautiful because of all the moisture. The scenery is breathtaking. Because it's so cold my angoras grow gorgeous fleeces.

Your barn clothes look WAY too clean. My barn coat can stand up by itself and I'm afraid to put my hands in the pockets.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful pics. We have a great pyr who just loves the snow, too!

No...not my yaks...just in town. My husband took that picture. We actually never figured out if they were yaks or Scottish Highlanders. My husband was going to stop next time in that area and ask.
