Talking UPDATE - Need Assistance, kid on the way

My last post to the above mentioned thread was on Oct. 30 - today we had a baby boy! With no help from us I might add - I looked out the door this afternoon after running some errands and there he was! After you look at the pics (I hope) could someone tell me if they think Momma is Nigerian, Pygmy or a mix. Baby's (not his permanent name) dad is completely unknown, she must have been pregnant when I got her; I've only had her for 124 days.

UPDATE - Need Assistance, kid on the way - Goats

Here is a picture of him with Mom

You can get a better idea of how little he is in this photo. He is standing next to a one gallon waterer and some 8 week old standard chicks.

I am not too good on the small breeds, but just looking it seems she looks on the Pygmy side and Baby really looks on the Pygmy side. I think Kittykity nailed it though Darn Cute!

Well I have a doe that looks like that and she is a registered Nigerian...she might not be full but I bet she is at least 3/4 Nigi and maybe 1/4 Pygmy. He is a sweety and he sure looks Nigerian also. Most say Pygmy when talking about small goats but Pygmys are very stocky and shorter legged. Most dont have that type of coloring either. I raise Nigerians and she sure looks like my Jitterbug and Jitter had a doeling that sure looks like him. My buck is a tri-colored Nigerian and his sire was B/W so that is why her babies looks the way they did....Good luck and I just love babies...cant wait till mine start again.

Nigerians can come in those colors. They look ND to me but there could be just about anything mixed in since you don't have papers or a service memo.

How tall is mom? Does she have any tattoos in her ears? You might need a flashlight put against the back of the ear (shining toward you through the ear) to see them as you read the inside.

Here's a really good site on ND color genetics:

The doe looks like a Nigerian to me. The kid reminds me of a baby Pygmy, but could be a Nigerian. It's harder to tell on a newborn kid.

Thanks for the suggestion of looking for a tattoo. I would not have know how to do it. I don't think I will be able to measure her - we are still not the best of friends - Yet! Now that I finally have her penned up with the baby I hope that will change. BTW we named him Taco and the plan is to make him a wether to keep our Buck company later on.

Well am I red-faced!
Turns out little Taco is a GIRL!! Yahoo!
We may change her name, but I'm not sure yet.
I still can't touch mom (we are working on it!) but I "squish" her several times a day myself. I have never had a baby goat before so this has been a real treat.

You are not the first to do that and even though I have been doing this for almost 5 years, I still make that same mistake every so often. Now I pick up the little stinkers at least a 1/2 dozen times and look at their bums before I confirm the sex to anyone. It's down right embarrassing to have to tell people you mixed up male with female or visa versa. But I have to agree with Hoofinitnorth and say she is more likely Nigerian, but boy is she a cutie pie.

For your first experience with babies, how do you like it? Aren't they just like beenie-babies with legs? I can't wait for mine to kid in the spring. WARNING--NIGERIAN KIDS ARE ADDICTIVE AND THERE IS NO REHAB. BUILT THAT CAN HELP YOU OVERCOME THIS PARTICULAR ADDICTION. SO BE AWARE AND BE CAREFUL.

Hug her for all of us!!!!!! Oh, she needs a name worthy of her cuteness.

Momma looks like your common grade pygmy. Grade pygmies, when bred away from their standard, will deviate back to more normal proportions and wilder patterns - Nigies and Pygmies are essentially the same goat, except some are bred for dairy and some for meat. Nigies were kept more 'natural' appearing and allowed to come in any color, while pygmies were selected for a certain type and bred down and to odd proportions... But if allowed to, they loose the short toothpick legs and wide foreheads. I like grade pygmies better, just as much meat but not as stocky and without the kidding problems, generally.

Baby is so cute. I've been literally going through a depression because I won't have any babies this year.
