The main purpose is to immunize against tetanus and enterotoxemia. It immunizes for other things too, but those are the main ones.

For most of the country it's overkill. Most older breeders who use it, do so because they have blackleg/malignant edema/gangrenous mastitis on their property.

Unless one of these 8 clostridiums are a problem in your area, so your vet or someone local tells you that you may need to use an 8 way instead of a 3 way (CD&T) than do so, otherwise it's overkill.

Bar Vac CD&T is what I use. Vicki

I use it here, the vet recommends it.

Vaccinating will also make your goat kids easier to sell than non-vaccinated ones. Although I know some people prefer to go the non-vaccinated route (ie, strictly use herbal remedies, etc), I also find many people in my area don't vaccinate just because they're cheap or don't care. Goats are cheap to give shots to.....I think I spent about $40 to vaccinate my 17 goats (this includes giving the kids a second shot booster). If you only have a couple of goats, it's maybe $12 a bottle for meds. Hardly expensive.

When I ask if someone has vaccinated their goats and they say no, they don't bother, I wonder why.....and do I want to risk introducing such a goat into my own herd? No. Vaccinations are not a 100% guarantee.

I don't show goats but I believe they have to be vaccinated for that? Maybe someone else here can answer that......I would HOPE they would have to vaccinate!

Nope - they haven't questioned me so far. Some shows they don't even check the tattoos unless you go Grand or Reserve Champion. Some have a vet check coming in, some don't.

pooks, are they required to vaccinate for shows, though?

I should say that I wouldn't always turn down a non-vaccinated goat, I worded that wrong. If I had been to their farm and seen their goats, they appeared to be healthy, the environment was clean, and I REALLY liked the goat, I would take it home, quarantine it (as I do anyhow now) and vaccinate it before introducing to my herd. BUT I would have to like the goat a lot to do that!
