Surge pulsators

Can someone tell me about pulsators for surge milkers. I have a "Type S" (or so I'm told) bucket. It appears to be the older type, and does have a seam. However the top of the bucket is there as well as the steel inflator holders (?), 4 rubber inflators. I need (as I understand it) a rubber seal for the underside of the lid and a working pulsator.

Are there different types of pulsators, or will any Surge work? If I need a specific type, how can I recognize it?

I'd like to put a milker together but there is no real hurry as I am only milking 2 right now, but in another 5 months that may change as 3 more organic milk delivery sub-systems come on-line.

I live in Amish country, and a lot of the Amish still use the Surge bucket milkers, so there are a couple local "dairy supply" businesses that still work on them. One of them is Bechtel Services in Wooster, Ohio.

There may still be available some "rebuild kits" for the pulsators. There are leather pieces inside that need to be replaced periodically. Bechtel Services recommended that I use an Interpulse pulsator because they are finding that a lot of the metal slides in the Surge puslators are wearing out, and they cannot find replacement parts.

Another source of information and parts is Hamby Dairy. I have heard that Paul Hamby has been very helpful when people have using the old Surge milker. I would expect that he could tell you which model you have I will try to post a link to their web site:

Yep, get a hold of Paul Hamby. You have to have the S pulsator to go with the S bucket. I do know that. Or convert it to a Interplus. And I don't think the S lid will convert to Interplus I think you have to have a newer lid with the rectangle thing where you put the valve in. I just rebuilt a C one and am using it. It seems to be working fine. I got the rebuild kit from Paul. Just call and talk to him he will tell you what you need.

Any lid will fit any bucket. So don't think you are stuck with just what you have, you can still use your bucket. Honestly buckets if you want the large T kettle type cost about $40 so I wouldn't keep a seemed bucket, and most seemed buckets are aluminum not stainless...I have alot of old buckets up for display in my barn and all the old seemed ones are actually alluminum.

Paul Hamby or partsdepartmentonline.com (Mike) can help they will know exactly what pulsator you need. You will also need new linings for your inflations and a new lid gasket. Do not use, used parts that touch the milk or touch the goats teats. Old stainless shells are fine as long as you get new inflations for the inside, but I prefer the silicone shells, they are lighter weight and don't pull down on the teats as much. Vicki
