I heard that this stuff just does not quit. It eats away the horn, but keeps going...I'm assuming like an acid...and the horns being part of the scull, that this paste keeps eating away the scull and into the brain and causes alot of damage or death.

Is this correct? And if so, WHY is this stuff even available?

Or, they wipe their heads on other goats, and it damages THEM.

Disbudding - cheap, easy, painful for about 10 seconds per bud, for ONCE in their lives.

Dehorning paste - cheap, difficult, dangerous, and must be held in restraing while the product chemically burns/cauterizes for about a 1/2 hour. If it gets in the eyes of the goat or on another goat, it causes severe damage.

I'll never ever ever use it.

My vet disbuds for $35 (went up from $25).....that includes a light sedative. My goats have never had an issue with the sedation, and they're mostly dwarf goats that get done. I feel great in knowing that they just fall asleep and wake up with a bit of a headache.

I guess I'm a bit of a wimp. I can easily slaughter poultry and do 'em up, but I can't for the life of me disbud a goat.

others use it for cows and put duct tape over it to keep it from getting spread around. by the time the duct tape wears off naturally, the stuff is no longer caustic... I have some for our calf, but then sold the calf before we used it... so I guess I should return it... but I've heard of people having much success with it.

On the other hand, I've heard that using the disbudding iron can cause brain damage because of the intensity of the heat, so I guess it depends on who you're talking to and what their favorite method is for dehorning/disbudding?

Darby Family, I went to your website, and that pig picture is probably the cutest thing I've seen in a while!

Yes the paste works but stings like the dickens and I didnt like it and you sure dont want to get it on yourself either...I have tried it 1 time and wont do it again...too much trouble and you have to restrain them while it works and they are crying more than when you disbud them. So from now on the paste is gone, bring on the iron.
