Finding a Buck

I’m sure this has been asked a million times, so here it goes, time 1 million and one.

How on God’s Green Earth do you find a buck to “service” your does?
Thought I had a gig set up with a gal that has a fine Alpine buck, but she’s just not calling me back.
Went to the local ADGA goat show and didn’t ask the lady I talked to about her Alpine bucks if they were accepting lady callers, that’s my own durned fault, thought I had things taken care of and now I’m at a loss.
The local Vets here don’t do AI and I don’t think I can do that safely myself. The ADGA web site is NO help whatsoever. 4H is out of the question, that’s where I got these goats and the gal who sold them to me has been no help in any aspect of anything and everything I have asked her about their heath, care and feeding and breeding.
Do I take an add out in the local paper?
Post a want add at the feed store?
Do I just breed them to the local unregistered healthy meat goat down the road?
ARRRRGGGGGGG!

Guess I can chalk this up as a learning experience, always, always!, have a back up plan!

Kris

Well. U can try put the ad on the board and u will be surprised that there will be more people who have registered goats. I was really surprised that I found more than only one person. It is becuz I post the paper for goats milk for sale. They starting to calling me. I was amazed that they live close to my home.. U can try that. OR look at the ADGA phone book if u are a member. U can call around and see what they say.. Good Luck.

If you are a member of ADGA get out your directory, start making phone calls all they can do is say NO.

I wish this forum had stickies where you could post the same type of posts that come up year after year. Yours is an all too familiar post we get daily. Breeders who sell you stock and promise to breed them and back down. Charging $150 to breed 4H kids stock. Most end up breeding to the billy down the road making their goatlings worth nothing.

Buy a buckling this spring, keep him and use him this fall, sell him or eat him and purchase another buckling each spring if you don't want to keep bucks around.

Sorry this is happening to you, you are not alone.

If you don't have the ADGA directory, email me and tell me your area code I can send you some CA breeders with Alpines and B service. (I am from San Diego). Vicki

Look through dugoatman website for breeders, even if their site is not updates, they are probably still there, or know someone, just call the folks. http://duhgoatman.tripod.com/goatkingdom.htm

You can post a free craigslist ad and be surprised at what you get.

good luck, it is such a hassle for sure!

I noticed that older (dairy) bucklings are suddenly selling pretty quickly on Craigslist, usually they take a while to sell. I guess it must be because of breeding season!

I'm shocked that I managed to find an Oberhasli breeder just 20 miles from me! (Then I found out it's where my Oberhasli came from, ha ha!) I found them through the site that jBlaze posted. Now I just need to keep an eye on my doe and figure out when she's in heat! (She was pinkish a couple days ago, and yesterday she had a bit of dried discharge that I've never seen before...)

I tried posting ads on Craigslist looking for goat stud service, but it gets flagged. But then again, people around here will flag anything, including legal livestock sales of horses & cattle.

Can you try your extension office, or ask your vet if they know of any breeders and they can pass your number on to? Even if the lady you got them from is in 4H does not mean that you cannot call the head of that 4H chapter or another and try to see if they know anyone.
My buck is going to be servicing some ladies this Nov. How they found me was the feed store. I brought in a little doeling that would not eat and my feeding tube was too large so I had her in there to measure. The guy next to me asked me if I had a Nigie buck and sure enough they want his services. Talking to his wife on the phone led me to the guy she uses for disbudding and I got that done today.
The people on craigs list can be idiots. I had a few ducklings for sale and one lady kept flagging me and telling me it was a PET. I told her would she want them living in her house? No well then shut up and leave my ad alone since they are livestock. Some of them should get a life.
