Question Bo-Se help

Does anyone know a vet that will fax a prescription of Bo-Se (selenium-tocopherol) to an online med store without having to see the animal? I live in the NW and the vets around my area are really sticking to the rules about having to see your animal before giving prescription. My area is very selenium deficient and my goat breeder has recommended this for my two goats, especially for does who will be bred soon. It's crazy that you can by antibiotic w/o a prescription here but not a vitamin/mineral. If anyone has a line on a vet who will do this, please let me know. Many thanks!

Can't you just get some from who you purchased the goats from? Join a local goat club and see what vets locals use, so you have one that is already educated.

Most vets, even mine aren't going to sell drugs of any kind or write perscriptions to someone they don't know, as it should be. There are crazy dosages out there, when I give it to someone I want to know they know what they are using it for and how much to give...same as your vet. Vicki

if you only have two goats, maybe the breeder you bought them from, can give/sell you some bo-se in a syringe?
you need a good goat vet. maybe now is the time to built a relation ship with one
there will be a time, you need one and it would be good to have one and not need to find one when you have an emergency and every minute counts.
goat/breed clubs are good to start and ask around for vets.
good luck

There is an online site that supposedly does this. I joined it but I have not gone back to try. It's a back-up for me, I guess, since my vets know my animals and my level of knowledge for using the scripts I request. I still like them to see the animals first, however.

Be careful with buying Rx medicines from non-vets as that is illegal for both parties.

What part of WA are you in?? I have a good relationship with my vet. But don't know if he would do that for somebody he doesn't know. I know of several breeders throughout the state, so maybe if I know where you are I could help some!!! If not got any local cattle breeders. MuSe can be given as long as you know the proper dose!! This is very important as you don't want to OD them on it!!!!

MuSe is a bad idea for goats.... you might try something like VetServ USA

PM me

Misty

The dose must be accurate. I have never used it. I bought a bottle of BoSe. But my vet, who knows goats, will give MuSe to them.

Doesn't your feedstore have just plain old selenium? I now can't find BoSe in Canada, (Got it from our vet in Maine.) So I now just use selenium injectable.

Patty.

I use Mu-se on my adult stock, I use Bo-se on my kids and young juniors. It is just a more concentrated form of the same thing. My vet is mostly a horse and cow vet so she keeps Mu-se plus it's like 1/4 the price to use it. Vicki

i only use Mu-Se +a vit E capsule on my adult animals. it is much cheaper compared to Bo-Se. i also give that to my pregnant does and they are not aborting
only my kids get Bo-Se because of the lower dosage.
misty why do you think Mu-Se is bad?

Check your local feed store. (Not a big chain store.) Where I got mine, the feed store has a standing prescription from a vet. Around here it is something everyone has to have. But with only 2 goats, it would be better to just get some from your breeder. The bottle is huge, and $38. Sheep people will have BOSE also.

Please do what Vicki suggested. Ask your breeder for the doses you need.
If per chance you dont know how to administer ask them to show you.
Then find yourself a good vet and all you need to do is call for the script. Before the goats even got here I consulted with the local vet at Pilchuck. They have been invaluable.
Yes they have seen my animals. But now, come kidding season, I call in for various prescriptions including BoSe. I have requested lots of things ranging from a single dose of epinephrine to have on hand to the yearly bottles of BoSe and Pen G.
