Well, I did it.

Last night I castrated goats for the first time. I used a burdizzo.

I gave them a dose of banamine about 30 minutes before. My dad came over to hold them for me as my husband refused to be anywhere around.

They squealed for just a second as I clamped and that was it. They were back with their momma's in less than 5 minutes.

Today they are doing well.

Thanks to everyone who helped with advice. I appreciate it!

Beth

Can I use this method with a March buckling?
How about a yearling I don't like the kids of?

He looks way too big to band, but I don't really want him a buck. We bought a preg doe, now the seller is refusing to cooperate about papers! She thinks we should just give him back to her for free! Hu? Oh, we do live and learn, get ALL necessary papers when buying!

Keep an eye on them and make sure that it really worked - I've "re-castrated" a few for people who were very good at using the Burdizzo and usually have no problems. Things happen sometimes.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Ok, I started this thread. But I had never actually googled burdizzo. After some of the posts above I thought I'd better. So, DON'T GOOGLE BURDIZZO! lol

If you want to know more about it, go to the fiascofarm website.

jblaze, I used this method on a May kid with no problem. I don't think I would use it on the yearling, though. But someone else may have more experience that can answer.

kclementsdvm, I am keeping an eye on the one I have here and I told the lady who bought the others to keep an eye on them and let me know if it doesn't seem to have 'taken'.

Beth

We warned you ..LOL Not pretty at all ! I may never recover. There are some words never meant to google, BURDIZZO is probably pretty high on the list.
