Colorado Serum Company - CL Vaccine

I just got off the phone with Co Serum - They anticipate the new goat CL vaccine will enter the market by late fall, or the very beginning of 09, depending on how long it takes to get the final government approval.

I asked about the vaccine creating a positive reading. They are indicating that is will not. According to them if a goat tests positive after vaccination, that is because it is positive, not a reaction to being vaccinated.

They will have technical bulletins available in the near future under their vet section on the coloradoserum.com website. If you would not like to wait, you can call and they will mail them to you.

Hopefully this will be a good preventative option. T

You know I believed them the first time they told me it would be out the Fall/Winter of 2007. Then I emailed them in the Spring 08 and was told it was going to be late 2008 and now they are saying late 09.
I also read that they have been promising this vaccine for quite a few years now.
They said there was alot of interest in this vaccine and they were in the "final stages", that was back in 07.
I do like their CD&T vaccine and it is a fairly local company so I like giving them my business. I am just not counting on them for this vaccine until I see that it is actually for sale.

thanks for sharing Jena. i think it would be helpful for those showing at fairs to prevent bringing this nasty disease home. also for people that have cl in their herd, it will help to eradicate this.
did he say anything about side effects or how effective it will be? what makes it different to the vaccine from the one used in australia?

I hope someone will keep us posted on this. I've never had a goat with CL, as far as I know, but I'm wondering about the milker I have on loan! She came with a scab on the side of her jaw, just above the beard, and now there's a small lump there. I thought when she first came that she'd scraped herself on something; now I'm not so sure. She's been at my place for four months now. I can't send her home yet, either, and she's been in with my goats all this time. I may need to vaccinate my other goats, if the vaccine actually does become available.

I can't understand how this would be possible..." to have a vaccine and not test positive" The whole point of a vaccine is to expose the body to an agent and the body creates specialized antibodies that reconize the agent and fight it off. Ex. if you have the chicken pox, after you recover you have chicken pox antibodies floating around in your blood. A blood test will say how many chicken pox antibodies you have floating around. If you do not have any floating around it is safe to say you will/can get chicken pox again.

I've heard that CL test is very specific and so maybe it won't pick up the small amounts of antibodies from the vaccine. Perhaps the test isn't looking for antibodies. Maybe it's looking for special markers that that bacteria produces.

It doesn't surprise me that it's taking forever. The FDA is always slower then molasses in January in approving things. Like watching grass grow sometimes.

We've run into way too many CL positive herds, so I know we'll be using it since we were fortunate enough to bring CL here a couple of years ago quite by accident. Better safe then sorry. And the $5 bottle of vaccine is way cheaper then $6 per goat to test constantly.

well, cats that have had the leukemia vaccine wont test positive unless they really are positive, unless the vaccine was given very rescenty to the test (same with parvo in dogs) so it is probably along those lines. The goat may test positive if the vaccine is given close to the blood draw, but maybe the technology is evolving.
