Injectable Ivermectin

Can the injectable be given as a drench or is it a different formulary? My step-daughter's vet suggested she give it to her Nubian wether for a skin condition as injectable. She lives in PA - she has 2 wethers - the one is fine - the other has terrible crusty flakes and hair falling out. She's been doing betadine and oatmeal baths, but he's just not clearing up. They're stalled together and eat only grain and hay. The vet is thinking it's mites? Personally I think he needs pasture and some good forage. Anyway ... my main question is about the injectable as a drench. Thanks!

i would give it as injection. did the vet a skin scraping? if it is mites, ivermectin alone does not work. at least did not here. i used olive oil with tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. that cleared it up almost immediately.

ALL wormers should be given orally to goats to be most effective
Make sure to get it into the back of the mouth so it goes in the rumen and stays in the body longer

And I agree with you that they need fresh air and sunshine as much as anything to be healthy

Aren't mites highly contagious? I would think that if they were housed together and one had them so badly that he was losing his hair, the other would show some symptoms of infestation as well.

mites are opportunist that will go to animals that are weak and/or stressed.
ivermectin is given sq for this kind of parasite and not p.o

I agree the injection will last longer injected than orally as the goats metabolism is very fast and the injection will last longer. It sounds like mites to me also and maybe a dusting of Sevin dust would help also and their bedding too.
