For You Who Test for CL CAE Johnes
Next week is the first for my little herd. Do you test those not yet breeding age?
The originals came from a CAE tested herd, have not brought anyone new in.
And how often is testing done?
I will also be asking vet to show me how to draw blood.
Thank you!

Testing is only worthwhile if you use with isolation and prevention as well.
If your herd is out and showing or if you're getting new stock, test 3-4 x per year. If your herd is closed, test at least twice.
Everything above 6 months of age should be tested.

I do a spring CAE test on colostrum and a winter blood pull, sometimes spring for CAE also. Now with biotracking offering both blood testing for pregnancy and CAE I am using them in the fall.
Although I do test incoming stock for CL via UC Davis, testing for CL or Johnnes just looks good on your website, it really is meaningless.
With dairy goats you simply won't find CL in most of them, it would quickly put you out of business. As far as Johnnes goes, purchasing from those who have long lived herds, and who keep infant kids away from adults is the best way of insuring you don't bring home Johnnes.
Nobody would go to a show and place their goats in a pen full of cattle poop, or any poop for that matter, so that pretty much takes care of catching Johnnes at shows Vicki

I test for CAE and CL twice a year, now that I can pull my own blood. It is cheap insurance in my opinion.

That simply is not true around here, in fact, we just went to a farm the other day to look at a new goat from someone that is very well known in dairy goats in this area and I noticed that over half the herd either had active abscesses or scars from past ones. Scarey scarey since they show frequently and when my daughter asked what it was my daughter was told that it was from a thorn. And I would say just from the numbers of goats in their herd that had it that they've had it established in their herd for quite some time.
I'm seeing this more and more frequently in this area and it's becoming a real pain to find clean goats. Needless to say I guess we'll have to start going out of state for goats since no one in this area seems to care whether they have it or not.

Ok let me rephrase that since it was about showing....dairy goats who are shown. Not dairies. Same with the boers I have seen at shows, abscess from CL is a stigma that when you are in the public eye you can't afford to have. Vicki

I do take some to shows. The minute they are unloaded they get feet dipped in strong bleach water before they set foot on home turf.
They are Boers. When looking for a Nubian buck for the one Nubie all the breeders around here insisted on Cl CAE Johnnes testing it seems everyone does it as well as the local Boer folks. I wound up taking her & the others back to my breeders (some 4hrs away) to be bred to a Boer.
Thanks Vicki I didnt think Johnnes was that big of threat I may opt out of that one.
What is the purpose of testing even 6mo olds if they arent going to be bred this fall? It seems redundant & expensive to be testing 6months later but as I said Ive never done this before and realize theres just a whole lot I still dont know!!

That person that 6e is talking about DOES show! Not just in kansas but all over the United states!
so those that think their goats are cl free because they quarantine better think again!

And yes I do know a very large herd in Kansas that I would not want to have to pen next to in a show, there is also a herd that when she comes down to north Texas shows I pen in my trailer. But on a whole we rarely see this type of thing at dairy goat shows, and the Lufkin Texas show I have shown in for years, is in conjuction with a boer goat show and walking the pens I have never seen anything.

ok ok...I just want to know. the only reason I am testing this yr is cause Im going elsewhere for buck service due to high gas prices. I want to give them the assurance cause they test. Its only right.
shhhow...part the original question had to do with testng does not big enough to be bred. I dont want to pay for needless stuff.
