I would never keep a 5.00 buck intact. I'm guessing unregistered, not disease tested, not vaccinated, not disbudded, not registered, etc. A buck is half your herd. You want to spend as MUCH as you can on the highest quality buck you can to pass his genetics on. Remember, you'll have to sell kids yearly out of him. A poor buck makes poor kids. Do YOU want to make more than 5.00 off of his kids?
How much are does going for in your area? A decent doeling, registered, from a good, clean herd will run you about 250+. Adult does in milk, more. You want to pay the higher price for higher quality - you'll be more pleased with them in the long run, trust me.
