It depends -- is he a bottle baby in with other bucklings/wethers, or is he in with the does? If he's not in with does, you can wait a while if you want, but if he's in with does he needs to be done by the time he's about eight weeks old, or you may have unplanned breedings. I waited until sixteen months old with a young buck that I planned to use for a pack wether, but by that age you have to have a vet do it. He shared a pen with his father, so it was safe to leave him that long.

I did my little Frankie at the same time he was disbudded. Poor guy so it was like 2-3 weeks old. Some people wait because it may be better for them with urinary calci. I was going through a rough time and was convinced to just get it over with. Frankie is Pygmy/ND and everything is going great...the twins will be 6 months old next week

Really, you can band them at any age. I have done some at 3 days old just fine, earlier then that it can still be done as long as he is dropped down on both sides. I wouldn't do it older then a year if even, if you can still get the band on then, it's a lot more stressful and you could have more problems.

That said I like to do mine at 3 weeks of age. For some reason at 3 weeks old they seam to feel it less then at any other age (I have banded from 3 days to 4 months of age). I have no idea why. I also give a shot of banamine a little before banding, for pain.

i banded at 4 months because i read somewhere that they are then big enough that urinary calculi would be less of a problem. none ever had UC, so it seems to have worked.

I band between the ages of 10 to12 weeks. It really depends on the size of his jewels.
