Kidding Great till Today

My first time Colored Full blood Boers are kidding...nine of them all 18 months old.
First 3 easy..found in trees near barn, dried off and nursing at a couple hours old.I am out there all the time--no neglect lots of TLC
Today Eclipse (her sister kidded yeserday no problems with 2 nice doe kids) was acting fun......and she smelled. I pulled out a dead doe kid and finally got the 2nd dead doe kid out. Nice kids.....dark red with black trim. Both 2 teated......darn I gave antibiotics in muscle and in the uterus and a shot of Oxytocin to help with clean

My question.......Red Eclipse is a very nice doe.......feed economics aside..I keep a dozen does......If she recovers OK, do you think I can breed her with the rest of the herd in December and try again? And she should kid normally next time?

Jerry

I would think if she doesn't get an infection she should be fine to breed again.
BUT, I am not the expert! I just think I would watch her close and consider it.
Any idea why the kids died? I would for sure keep her close if she is bred again, and stable her close to the due date, just to be sure it didn't happen again.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you get rid of the infection.

Infuse the uterus again if she is not closed, tetracycline is the drug of choice. Although a vet script or pennicillin is the drug of choice to keep the uterine infection at bay...and it's not an infection if it's just dead kids. Banamine given at 1cc per 100 pounds for 6 days will also help keep inflammation down and scar tissue to a minimum. Did you check the uterus very well to make sure everything was out? If not lutelyse her 2cc IM.

You will want to continue with the systemic antibiotics....if penn it's 3cc per 50 pounds and it wouldn't hurt to give it twice a day for 10 day....subq on any over the counter antibiotics, it's just way to much drug and way to often to give it IM.

Your next doe who kids will be the litmus test on what exactly went wrong, if this dead slurry kid repeats you know your buck has chlamydia or mycoplasma...if you do get another late term abort...immediatly give tetracycline shots to everyone, and put the herd on a feed through tetracycline for the season.
